What is a Citizen Scientist?
You do not need to be a scientist to do this job, and you don’t need an academic background to be considered for this role.
As a Citizen Scientist, you will help to ensure that Camden is a place where everyone has a voice. We will provide training and support to help you do this. You will be someone who enjoys being out and about in the community, talking to people. We are looking for people with energy, enthusiasm, and the passion to help us make social change a reality, so that nobody in Camden gets left behind.
About the role
Using your experience and understanding of Camden as a place to live, work and study, you will help us to put our residents’ voices and experiences at the centre of everything we do. You will work closely with the Participation Team, where you will be supported to encourage strong citizen involvement in key council projects.
These 4 roles will support our Community Wealth Fund initiative. This is an exciting new investment fund that aims to create a more equal economy in Camden. Despite the wealth and economic growth in the borough, many people and communities do not benefit from it. This fund will seek to address this inequality by sharing the benefits of Camden's growth more fairly and making a positive impact on people's lives. You can find more information HERE
This role will be a work placement, which is offered as a fixed-term contract for 12 months. During this placement, you will be required to complete a one-year, accredited course delivered by our partner, University College London, which will enable you to develop and demonstrate core competencies as a Citizen Scientist. You do not need an academic background or high standards of English and Maths to succeed on this course, as it focuses on practical learning. Your working hours will be split between study and project work, enabling you to complete your Citizen Science accreditation within your contractual working hours.
This placement is seen as a pathway to alternative, longer term employment, either within or outside the council. We are looking to recruit people who may want to overcome barriers to employment and whose experience of living in Camden can help us build fairer communities.
About you
Please see the ‘Additional Information’ section of the job profile (attached below) for more information about requirements for this role.
We particularly welcome applications from people whose experience of living in Camden can help us deliver the Community Wealth Fund missions, which are:
- Ensuring every young person has access to economic opportunity that enables them to be safe and secure
- Those holding positions of power in Camden are as diverse as our community – and the next generation is ready to follow.
