An estimated 1.4 million workers in the UK suffer from work-related ill-health. The Health & Occupation Research network (THOR) operates from the COEH at the University of Manchester to collect data on occupational disease in the UK and Ireland. This project, funded by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Health and Safety Authority in Ireland, relies on more than 1000 specialists and occupational physicians who voluntarily report cases of occupational and work-related ill health. Its main objectives are to monitor the new occurrence of work-related ill health, to investigate possible causes and to carry out special studies of methodology in various disease categories. The project assistant would be responsible for the day-to-day administration of two THOR surveillance schemes, OPRA and THOR-GP, including communication with participants, primary data handling and processing, maintenance of the research database and data coding. They will also assist in the preparation of reports, the preparation of summary data for internal and external meetings and any ad hoc tasks as required.
