Job description

job description:

The Team

The Casualty Exposure Management team drives our risk management strategy in areas of litigation and liability. The main focus of the team is to measure the size of the bet we take, and communicate the largest risks we run within Casualty. The risks that matter to us continue to emerge and evolve, ranging from AI to climate change litigation. The team are building out a consistent framework to systematically identify, quantify and mitigate liability emanating from these areas.

The Internship

During the internship you can expect to:

  • Research a current affairs topic, understanding how our insurance policies might be exposed to risk in that area and assessing how material this is to us as a business. Topics that you will research could include liability arising out of climate change, hybrid buildings and artificial intelligence.
  • Present your research findings to the Casualty Exposure Management team, having an opportunity to develop your communication and presentation skills.
  • Build a broad understanding of underwriting and the largest risks we may insure (working across several other teams).
  • Work with third parties to assess our exposure to liability accumulations. This would involve identifying and cleansing data, liaising with the vendor to understand their model and assumptions, and summarising and interpreting the output to support decisions of whether the model adds value to our assessment of Casualty risk.
  • Have flexibility to focus on areas that interest you - whether coding opportunities for those interested in the analytical side, legal research skills for reviewing our contract wordings, or publishing articles relating to issues impacting insurers and society today, we can tailor the internship to ensure you truly get the most out of your time here.

Throughout your internship, you will receive lots of support, starting with an induction day to welcome you into the business and get you settled in. Through targeted training sessions you will develop an understanding of our business and the industry we operate in. In addition, your line manager and dedicated ‘buddy’ will provide regular support throughout, and you will also have check-ins with the Early Careers team to talk through your development and internship experience.

As a business, we have adopted hybrid working, where we have a combination of time in the office and at home. In this role you can expect to be in the office approximately 2 days per week, although you are welcome to attend the office more frequently if you would like.

person specification:

What is needed to excel in this opportunity?

  • Ideally you’ll be studying a research-based degree (Journalism, Social Sciences, Law etc.) but analytical disciplines such as Maths, Statistics, Engineering and Sciences will also be considered
  • Curiosity about insurance and risk as well as the impact of current affairs on the industry is key (prior insurance knowledge is not needed)
  • Strong ability to thoroughly research a topic, extract key points and communicate relevant insight and analysis in a clear and simple way
  • An inquisitive mind and a thirst for knowledge, as well as a drive to deliver value from their activities
  • Knowledge of Excel is beneficial but not essential

What are the requirements?

Our internships are open to current students in their penultimate year who are planning to return to one further year of undergraduate or postgraduate studies following their time with us. In other words, if you are due to graduate from an Undergraduate or Master’s degree in 2024, we want to hear from you.

You’ll be on course for at least a 2:1 degree (or equivalent).

As well as being able to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, you’ll be good with numbers and able to speak and write fluently in business English.

You must, by the start of the employment, have permission to work in the UK.

The Internship will take place from 26 June to 18 August 2023. The salary for our internship programme is £25,000 per annum.

The closing date for applications is 3 March 2023, although opportunities may close earlier if we receive a high volume of applicants – therefore we recommend that you apply as soon as possible.
