Job description

2039322BJ-R

The data-driven network biology group is looking for a Research Fellow to join their mission to develop data-driven tools to control cell fate systematically. The data-driven network biology group is led by Dr Rackham, an Associate professor of Systems Biology at the University of Southampton and the theme lead for Cell and Molecular Medicine at the Alan Turing Institute. His team develops machine-learning and A.I.-based tools by combining wet and dry lab expertise.

We are looking to recruit a PhD or equivalent professional qualification in Computational Biology with a detailed understanding and knowledge of the processing and analysis of gene expression data from RNA and single-cell RNA sequencing. The applicant will have some experience in programming and an interest in how to apply ML/AI for solving biological problems. Knowledge of or experience with stem cell biology, gene regulatory networks and high-performance computing is beneficial.

Southampton University is a world-leading research university, with 97% of its research work assessed as world-leading and internationally excellent in the REF 2014 assessment. UOS is a Russell group member, and its research impacts government policy-making, health issues, teaching and on business. Dr Rackham has a strong track record in both the development and commercialisation of data-driven tools. His group has published several high-impact studies, including papers in Nature, Nature Genetics and Cell Systems, he is the co-founder of Mogrify Limited, and his group strives to provide a supportive and inclusive environment in which it’s members can develop.

Southampton is one of the best places in the UK for biological and biomedical teaching and research.

The work will take place at the main University campus, in Building 85, which was recently constructed (2008; £47M) to house Biological Sciences researchers and those who conduct multidisciplinary research in any aspect of life sciences, as well as Southampton General Hospital.

Southampton is a gateway to the south coast of England, offering access to city living and both the coast and countryside. It is a delightful place to live and work!

This research study will develop machine-learning-based tools that can exploit the volume of single-cell RNA sequencing to develop our ability to control cell fate systematically. This project will involve the curation and deployment of large biological datasets. It is an exciting time in cell biology as both the volume of data and the maturity of A.I. have opened the possibility for new tools and technologies. The applicant should have expertise in computational biology and curiosity for solving complex biological questions through the application of algorithms.

This post is suitable for computational biologist/bioinformaticians with an interest in understanding cell fate control and a strong background in the development of computational/mathematical/statistical tools.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

This position is being offered on a full-time, fixed-term basis for 3 years.
