You will join an exciting interdisciplinary project to develop new rapid diagnostic techniques to analyse the resistance of bacteria to antibiotics. The project is funded by the NIHR and is a collaborative activity with Public Health England and the University Hospital Trust. The goals of the project are to develop new assays, prototype sample preparation cartridges and demonstrate concordance of the assay against classical microbiology techniques.

You will collaborate closely with our partners and deliver and present progress at regular progress meetings. You must be self-motivated and work independently under your own initiative. You must have excellent communication skills and proven ability in English language (written and verbal) for regular formal reporting. You also need to demonstrate initiative in problem solving and good practical capabilities.

This interesting project requires an engineer or physical/chemical scientist with a PhD in Engineering or Physical Sciences. You must have skills and expertise in microfluidics preferably in design, simulation and microfabrication.

The post is for 12 months and will be held at the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS). Ranked in the top one per cent of universities globally and among the UK’s top 20 for research, the University of Southampton has an international reputation for its research, teaching and enterprise activities.
