About us

The Department of Clinical and Experimental Epilepsy is amongst the most research-intensive epilepsy departments in the world. Our mission is to transform the lives of people living with epilepsy for the better by identifying, understanding and correcting or preventing the underlying mechanisms leading to the epilepsies and associated comorbidities in each individual person. Our vision is to build upon the excellence and breadth of our research, seamlessly integrating basic and clinical science.

We are in the midst of a revolution in our understanding of the internal organisation of the cells due to the learning that liquid-liquid phase separation enables self-assembly of the liquid-like membrane-less organelles.

About the role

We are now recruiting a Research Fellow or a Research Assistant to work on a project (‘Role of liquid crystal-like phases of proteins in the organisation of membrane compartments’) aiming to test the hypothesis that membrane-bounded organelles, such as the Golgi apparatus, are also stabilised or even templated by analogous phase separations of their surface proteins. A unique international team with complementary skills in physics, physical chemistry, biochemistry and cell biology has been established to test this.

You will play an essential role in this project by expressing, isolating, and characterising a variety of proteins of interest using both established and customised approaches. You will also have the opportunity to utilise the breadth of expertise and technologies available across the collaborating groups operating in Yale, Paris, Madrid, and Barcelona.

The role is available from 01 September 2023 and funded by a grant from ERC Synergy to 31 August 2026 in the first instance.

If you need reasonable adjustments or a more accessible format to apply for this job online, or have any queries regarding the application process, please contact the Institute of Neurology HR Team ([email protected]).

Informal enquiries regarding the role can be addressed Dr Sergey Novoselov (e-mail: [email protected]).

A full job description and person specification for this role can be accessed below.

About you

You will have a BSc/MSc (PhD for Research Fellow appointment) in Biology or related subject and experience in biochemical techniques, including protein expression, purification, characterisation, post-translational modification, and western blotting. IT proficiency at advanced user level and the ability to maintain high standards of technical excellence and experimental reproducibility is also required for this role.

This role meets the eligibility requirements for a skilled worker certificate of sponsorship or a global talent visa under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. Therefore, UCL welcomes applications from international applicants who require a visa.

What we offer

Appointment as Research Fellow is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD and is offered with starting salary of £40,524 - £48,763 per annum including London Allowance.
