Job overview

Post 1 – This is for 12 months and will be at CT/SpR level on the on-call rota for 2 days per week with 3 days clinical teaching.

Post 2 – this post will be until the end of March 2024. This post will only clinically be on the CT/SHO rota. 2.5 days will be clinical and 2.5 days undertaking clinical teaching.

The post will be a split of 50% clinical and 50% teaching. The post is available to start with from 2 August 2023 and the contract can be offered until March 2024.

This post would be ideal for either a doctor with a minimum of four years clinical practice, post medical school, and with a minimum of one-year experience in Orthopaedics at SHO/CT Level


  • The post is a junior clinical fellow post in orthopaedics. The post is 50% clinical with the successful candidate working on the CT or ST clinical rota depending on their clinical experience and 50% teaching. The successful candidate will be offered the chance to undertake a higher degree, via the Masters in Medical Education, present at local, regional, national conferences and research innovative ideas in medical education. The Department fully supports all Teaching Fellows in developing the course and UMED has its own annual Undergraduate Medical Education Conference, where best and innovative practice can be shared.

Main duties of the job

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical: The clinical section of the post will involve working in the orthopaedic trauma unit at QMC. Depending on clinical experience the successful candidate will be on the CT or ST rota. There will be an on call commitment. The unit is the busiest major trauma centre in the country and there is a wealth of experience to be gained. Working at QMC will offer an excellent skillset for those looking to apply to a specialty training number in the future.

Teaching: The aim of the post is to work alongside the other Clinical Teaching Fellows and the Undergraduate Education Manager (currently Nick Kythreotis) to both deliver teaching to medical students at NUH and to develop new initiatives when teaching students.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES FOR TEACHJING

The aim of the post is to work alongside the other Clinical Teaching Fellows and the Undergraduate Education Manager (currently Nick Kythreotis) to both deliver teaching to medical students at NUH and to develop new initiatives when teaching students.


  • To deliver ward based Orthopaedic teaching on the Foundation For Practice (FFP) Surgery curriculum, Advance Practice 1 (AP1) course and Advance Practice 2 (AP2) course, across both the City and QMC Campus.
  • Contribute to Patient and Simulated Patient Workshops on the clinical course.
  • To provide reasonable cover where appropriate for the other Clinical Teaching Fellows (and vice-versa.)
  • Contribute to the assessment of students in for the form of DOPS and Mini-Cex’s during the formal FFP, AP1 and AP2 competency assessments and patient workshops across the clinical course
  • Contribute to Induction of FFP, AP1 and AP2 students.
  • To provide teaching on the Early Clinical Experience Course
  • Contribute to the formal examination of these students including OSCE examinations and exam question writing. Take part in one-to-one tutoring of students re-sitting their exams and provide one-two-one teaching support for struggling students.
  • Contribute in a strategic sense to the evolution of teaching for all the above groups.
  • Support teaching across the clinical course as required.
  • Working with the Undergraduate Manager and other Teaching Fellows to develop innovative teaching methods across the clinical course.
  • Undertake appropriate projects to support your own learning and improve the experience of the Department.

  • Four years clinical practice post medical school Minimum of one year experience in Orthopaedics at CT Level

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of teaching using digital media, podcasts, e-learning, iPads & Smart-boards. Well-presented log book or professional portfolio. Clinical experience in acute healthcare other than within main specialty.

Teaching

Essential criteria

  • Evidence of interest in and clear commitment to teaching and have experience in undergraduate or postgraduate teaching.

Desirable criteria

  • Teaching qualification or publication. Presentations at local/regional/national meetings.

Research/Publications:

Essential criteria

  • Evidence of previous research interest and/or publications

Desirable criteria

  • Participation in a clinically-based and/or educational research project with involvement at key stages (design, data collection, analysis, preparation of abstracts and final paper). Experience of presenting work regionally/nationally via posters, oral presentations, publications.
