Job description

Are you Interested in working for a world top 100 university?
We have an exciting opportunity in the Department of Psychology a Research Associate.
The Research Associate will join a multidisciplinary team working on a project called “Technology-enabled Reusable Assets for a Circular Economy” (or TRACE), which launched in February 2022 with the aim to apply ultra-low-cost RFID technology to trace reusable food-grade plastic packaging, encouraging reuse and enabling highly-scalable infrastructure. The project is funded by the Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging: Business-led Research & Development competition and is led by PragmatIC, alongside RECOUP Recycling, Ken Mills Engineering Ltd, and Topolytics. These organisations work with a multidisciplinary team of scientists at The University of Sheffield, including colleagues in the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC-Cymru), the Department of Chemistry, and the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The project is structured around two workstreams:

  • Packaging Design: We will understand and define the boundaries for the design requirements of reusable-packaging incorporating the embedding of RFID tagging technology.
  • Consumer Behaviour: We will consider how consumers engage with reuse systems that incorporate tracking technologies and strategies for fostering engagement.
The postholder will be expected to carry out this research, including developing protocols, drafting research materials (e.g., measures and manipulations), recruiting participants, collecting and analysing data, and reporting the findings, both internally (e.g., at project meetings) and externally, to academic and non-academic audiences (e.g., at conferences, in scientific journals, and to relevant stakeholders).

We are committed to exploring flexible working opportunities which benefit the individual and University.

We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
