Job description
Applications are invited from enthusiastic researchers to participate in an exciting program of research aimed at advancing technology/simulations tools for the development of advanced, next-generation nuclear reactors. The program is jointly funded by UK EPSRC and US Nuclear Engineering University Program (NEUP) and a collaboration between the University of Sheffield, Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and EDF Energy in the UK and a number of US universities and national labs. The US project partners will carry out experimental investigations and the UK team will undertake complementary model development and validation.
Working closely with a team of academics, engineers and Research Associates from the UK and the US, you will be responsible for numerical simulations using both conventional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) CFD and high-fidelity large eddy simulation (LES) approaches. You will perform high-fidelity simulations of natural and mixed convection in a liquid metal pool using LES to generate trustworthy detailed information to support experimental endeavours, advance the understanding of the complex flow physics, and create a database for model development. You will also contribute to the research into improving the understanding of non-equilibrium turbulence, including that in unsteady and spatially developing flows. You will attend regular project meetings reporting your progress and contributing to discussions in other project areas. You will have opportunity to visit the US experimental facilities.
You should hold or are about to complete a PhD in computational fluid dynamics or have equivalent experience. Candidates should have a good background and experience in one or more of the following areas: nuclear thermal hydraulics, turbulence modelling, direct numerical simulation (DNS) reduced order modelling, programming, and a good understanding of flow physics.
Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Shuisheng He at [email protected].
We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK.
