Job description
Applications are invited for a Research Associate in AI for Radio Astronomy, funded by an Alan Turing Institute AI Fellowship. This post is available from 1 August 2023 for a duration of 12 months.
The post will be held at the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics (JBCA) at the University of Manchester, and will work on the development of AI approaches to image-based object classification for large-scale radio surveys in the key science areas of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project. In particular the post will focus on the use of Bayesian Convolutional Neural Networks and their application to radio astronomy data, including their sensitivity to rare objects, their use in minimising training data and implementing active learning approaches, as well as the development of application specific model selection.
The successful candidate will work with Prof Anna Scaife and her research group, and will be expected to interact with the wider international SKA community, including staff at the SKA Organisation in order to develop the SKA processing and post-processing systems.
Applicants should have a PhD (or equivalent) (by the start date) in Astrophysics or Computer Science. Strong programming skills and demonstrated previous experience in machine learning are required. The candidate should also be well-organised and self-motivated with excellent oral and communication skills. A good publication record in internationally peer-reviewed journals is of strong benefit.
