Job description
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, ambitious postdoctoral scientist to join the NIHR Sheffield Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) and the Department of Neuroscience at The University of Sheffield. You will work to establish a panel of wet biomarkers for mitochondrial function, energy homeostasis and other blood-based biomarkers relevant for neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and motor neuron disease. These wet biomarkers are of major importance to track disease progression and determine target engagement of neuroprotective compounds tested in clinical trials. Examples for such wet biomarkers include ATP quantification in whole blood, assessment of mitochondrial function in peripheral blood cells or phenotypic profiling using an OmniLogTM bioanalyser.
Bringing fresh and diverse perspectives, you will join a multidisciplinary team of researchers within the Department of Neuroscience and the associated NIHR Sheffield Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). As a world leading centre for research and training, the NIHR Sheffield BRC is keen to attract and cultivate the most promising academic researchers. Focused on the pull-through of lab-based discoveries into early phase clinical trials, the NIHR Sheffield BRC brings together outstanding scientists from The University of Sheffield and clinical disciplines at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to reduce the translational gap between research ideas and the development of new treatments, diagnostics and medical technologies.
We are seeking a highly motivated researcher with a track record of conducting high-quality biological research, ideally in the area of neuroscience. You will be expected to have evidence of academic achievement, for example in the form of high-quality publications.
We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK.
