Job description
We’re looking for a highly motivated researcher to work with Professor Matthew Flinders on a project exploring the intersection between research and public policy. Professor Flinders and his academic and non-academic collaborators are leading the debate about the mobility of knowledge, talent and skills across traditional disciplinary, professional and organisational boundaries. This is therefore an opportunity to join an exciting and inter-disciplinary research team, and to work with a range of international networks and associations.
Based at the University of Sheffield, you will undertake evaluative research on the first phase of the ESRC Public Policy Fellows initiative (2021-2023). The aim being to assess how well the investment performed in terms of facilitating the mobility of researchers into policy-making organisations and contexts. The research will involve the analysis of survey data, plus the design and delivery of around 30 semi-structured interviews with former fellows and policy hosts. You will be expected to play a lead role in relation to thematic data analysis, and to contribute to the authorship of a final report and research papers. The findings of this project will then be used to inform and shape mobility-focused opportunities in the future, within and beyond the UK.
Specifically, we are looking for someone with a completed (or near complete) PhD, or with equivalent experience. You will have a strong interest in policymaking, and some knowledge of the barrier and blockages that can face researchers when trying to engage with policymakers. The successful candidate will have excellent organisational skills and be adept at working on their own initiative and as part of a team. A willingness to adapt and take on new skills is essential.
As part of this post, we are committed to providing training, mentoring and support to develop the successful candidate’s skills and will help you advance your own career goals.
