Job description
The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a Research Associate in Process Systems Engineering. The position is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and in collaboration with GSK and you will carry out research at the intersection of process systems engineering and bioprocessing. You will develop advanced bioprocess models to enable the design of optimal, flexible biomanufacturing recipes and related process control strategies. Of particular interest are model-based approaches to design space characterization and optimization, derivation of surrogate models, integration with process analytical technologies, development of a digital twin and end-to-end process optimization.
The position is part of the wider collaboration with GSK towards the development of advanced modelling, optimization and control methodologies for biomanufacturing. You will work under the supervision of Dr Maria Papathanasiou and Prof Cleo Kontoravdi at the Sargent Centre for Process Systems Engineering.
Duties and responsibilities
Your key responsibilities will include:
- developing end-to-end biomanufacturing process models
- developing computer-aided methods for design-space characterization and optimization
- generating new codes, evaluating, and fully documenting them
- collaborating with the industry partner by collecting information, gaining process know-how, and implementing optimization and control algorithms
Essential requirements
To be successful, you should have a PhD (or equivalent) in process systems engineering, chemical engineering or another relevant topic.
