About the Department:
The Department of Development Studies is part of the College of Development, Economics and Finance at SOAS. It offers a range of degree programs, both on-line and on-campus, at BSc, MSc and PhD levels. Our degrees are inter-disciplinary, combining political economy, politics, anthropology and history approaches to analyse processes of development in different contexts around the world. It offers an intellectually engaged and challenging space across the many branches of international development and humanitarianism that make up Development Studies as a discipline. Our staff specializes in a range of thematic areas including sustainability and climate change, migration and displacement, conflict, humanitarian action, labour, political ecology, agrarian change, the politics of development, and aid.
The Department is the host for the Independent Inquiry and Research into the Violence in August-September 2022 in Leicester, UK, an externally funded research project involving SOAS, the LSE and The Monitoring Group (a prominent anti-racist campaigning group). It is advised by legal experts based in the US and in the UK. In addition, it aims to work with community groups, local activists and local governmental bodies. This project has started on May 7, 2023, and is expect to run until at least May, 2024.
About the Role
The successful candidates will have, or can demonstrate that they are close to submitting, a doctoral degree in the social sciences or humanities related to contemporary Indian politics, the politics of the Indian diaspora, or the politics of social or traditional media. They will have experience in conducting fieldwork for academic research, and will have (or will commit to having) completed certification in research integrity (such as Epigeum or comparable).
The job will require the Researcher to a) take part in training and meetings on research methods; b) participate in formulating research questions and in research design; c) participate in designing of questionnaires and topic guides, and other tools of data collection; d) conducting field research in Leicester (and elsewhere if required); e) conduct depth interviews, compile life histories [B1] and analyze public documents; f) research newspaper, radio, media and social media coverage of relevant events; g) compile data and other research material; h) help in the preparation of reports and papers.
