We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated Research Assistant in Vaccine Development to support the work of Sandy Douglas’ group at Jenner Institute, Nuffield Department of Medicine. You will work with a team of scientist developing vaccines and advancing knowledge on a range of infections, including rabies, COVID-19 and Epstein-Barr virus.
You will be responsible for producing high quality data using a range of modern laboratory techniques, such as cell culture, chromatographic protein purification, ELISA, quantitative PCR, mammalian cell culture, DNA cloning, flow cytometry and viral culture. You will develop your skills in experimental design, planning and analysis, while making a meaningful contribution to global health through developing new vaccines. You will manage your own research and administrative activities within guidelines provided by senior colleagues, and you will contribute to wider project planning, including ideas for new research projects and determine the most appropriate methodologies to test hypotheses, and identify suitable alternatives if technical problems arise.
It is essential that you hold a first degree in medical science or a related discipline with practical experience of biology, medical science or similar laboratory work. You will have knowledge of vaccinology, infectious disease, and/or molecular biology and the ability to work within established research programmes, with the potential to contribute ideas for new and improved experiments. You will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to maintain clear laboratory records and write for publication. Prior experience in one or more of the above laboratory techniques is highly desirable.
