Job description
Internship Opportunities Summer 2023
The MRC Biostatistics Unit, one of Europe's leading biostatistics research institutions, is pleased to announce the launch of a Summer Internship Programme for 2023. Under this programme, successful applicants will be employed by the Unit to undertake work which contributes to the Unit's established research portfolio. They will also learn about career opportunities in developing statistical methods for biomedical applications.
These internships might ideally suit 2nd and 3rd year undergraduate students and students having recently graduated in Mathematics, Statistics or a closely related field with a strong quantitative component.
The Unit is organised around four research themes: - design and analysis of randomised trials (DART) - precision medicine and inference for complex outcomes (PREM) - statistical omics (SOMX) - statistical methods using data resources to improve population health (SURPH)
We have one project remaining, in the DART theme. Blog posts by interns from previous internship programmes are available here: https://www.mrc-bsu.cam.ac.uk/blog/interning-at-the-bsu/
The interns will be exposed to the day-to-day activities of a statistical methodologist in biomedical research and they will learn about possible career paths. They will attend group meetings and meet with various staff members across the above four themes.
Successful candidates will be appointed to a fixed term full-time position (Monday - Friday) for 8 weeks in the summer 2023 (between mid June and mid September - exact dates to be confirmed/agreed with the intern) at Grade 5 (£27,929 - £32,348). Remote/hybrid working arrangements will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
There are no prerequisites of medical statistics knowledge. While previous experience is welcome, the purpose of the internship is to introduce interns from various backgrounds to the field of medical statistics and methodological research.
The Unit is actively seeking to increase diversity among its staff, including promoting an equitable representation of men and women. The Unit therefore especially encourages applications from women, from minority ethnic groups and from those with non-standard career paths. Appointment will be made on merit.
The applicants should submit a CV and a cover letter, which should outline why they have applied for this internship and what they plan to achieve by the end of it.
