Job description
Pathobiology & Population Sciences
We are looking for a research assistant to join the lab group of Dr Daniel Goldhill to work on evolution of influenza viruses.
This research project will examine at how influenza viruses can evolve to use different host receptors. The project will test differences between avian and bat influenza viruses and how influenza can evolve to use a novel protein receptor. We will use pseudotyped viruses and deep scanning mutagenesis to determine the key changes in influenza viruses which allow them to infect bats. The overall project aims to develop general principles that will help predict whether viruses can switch receptors.
The researcher assistant will be responsible for passaging cell cultures, perform cloning, sequencing and other molecular virology experiments. They will also participate in lab meetings and maintaining the lab environment and other lab-based duties as needed. We are looking for an applicant who has experience working in a molecular biology lab.
This position would suit a recent master’s student but qualified undergraduate students will be considered if they can demonstrate appropriate research experience in a lab.
The position is a 12 month, fixed-term contract, starting in October 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter, and located at the Hawkshead campus of the RVC. This post is funded through an award from the Academy of Medical Sciences.
We offer a generous reward package and benefits including:
- Competitive and attractive pension package
- Generous 30 days annual leave (plus bank holidays and concessionary days)
- A range of family friendly policies, including adoption, maternity and paternity pay and leave

While this is a full-time role, we welcome applications from individuals who wish to be considered for part-time working or other flexible working arrangements. The lab aims to be an inclusive environment to work in and applications are particularly welcome from women, black and minority ethnic candidates who are under-represented in research posts in RVC.
As a laboratory and Department, we will be considerate and welcoming of all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity. We acknowledge societal inequalities and how these impact us, and those around us, personally and professionally.
