Job description
About the role:
This is a fixed term, full time contract for 4 months
Colleagues at the Environment Agency and Nottingham Trent University are partners in this collaborative research project, which will develop methods to assess the ecological condition of sites in England’s small streams, as part of Defra’s Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment Programme. We will evaluate the suitably of standard Environment Agency survey and sampling methods, and will make recommendations for whether these methods should be used, adjusted or replaced in small stream condition assessments.
As our Research Assistant in River Ecology, you will be based at Nottingham Trent University’s School of Science and Technology, on our Clifton Campus. The start and end dates of your four-month fixed-term contract are flexible, but the post must be completed by December 2023. You will work alongside a senior Research Assistant to complete a programme of ecological research to test methods for sampling aquatic invertebrate communities (e.g. kick sampling) and for surveying plant communities in small streams across England. Your primary role will be to process collected samples in the laboratory, including identification of aquatic macroinvertebrates, mainly to family level. You will also become part of our diverse research team, which includes professorial to undergraduate researchers who are investigating biodiversity responses to environmental variability in freshwater ecosystems.
Details of your principal duties and responsibilities are provided in the attached job description and person specification.
