Job description
We are seeking an enthusiastic Graduate Research Assistant to join Dr Oliver Bannard's “B Cell Biology Group” at the MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine (MRC WIMM) to assist us in investigating how antibody-mediated immunity develops after immunisation and during infection.
Our lab is interested in humoral immunity generally, but has a particular interest in germinal centres – unique structures in which antibodies rapidly “evolve” their antibody genes through iterative rounds of random mutagenesis and clonal selection. The successful candidate's primary role would be to perform experiments aimed at understanding the fundamental principles underpinning antibody affinity maturation and the development of humoral immunity. This may involve running experiments independently and/or working alongside others in the lab. The role will also involve some general lab management. Extensive prior lab experience is not essential, however applicants should know the basics and already be comfortable working independently at the bench. For example, the position might suit someone who has completed a substantial independent undergraduate research project (e.g. over 6 months), or has held a previous RA position. Training in specific techniques will be provided.
Further details on the lab's research can be found on the lab website and in recent publications; https://www.imm.ox.ac.uk/research/units-and-centres/mrc-human-immunology-unit/research-groups/bannard-group-b-cell-immunology.
To be considered for this position you should hold a degree (first class or 2:1) in immunology, molecular/cell biology or another relevant area in biological sciences. Excellent organisational skills and good communication and interpersonal skills are also essential. It would be desirable for you to have experience working in an immunology laboratory and of in vivo models, however this is not essential. Previous experience of immunological assays and of lab management are also desirable. Candidates with PhDs or with more lab experience may also apply; the nature of the work and the salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The post is fixed-term for 2 years, in the first instance. Informal enquiries are welcome and can be made to Oliver Bannard ([email protected]).
Applications for this vacancy should be made online and you will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your application. The supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience.
Only applications received by 12.00 midday on Wednesday 15 March 2023 will be considered.
