Job description
The Faculty of Social Sciences is a large and diverse grouping of thirteen departments, including 'classical' social science departments, along with several major subject areas, some of which are distinctive to Sheffield. This rich disciplinary mix, encompassing both world-leading academic research and education and a strong practitioner focus in particular areas, uniquely positions the faculty among Sheffield's peer institutions.
The successful candidate will join the project investigator Dr Manoj Menon, who leads the Environmental Soil Science Group (ESSG) in Sheffield.
As one of the largest Geography departments in the UK, the Department of Geography at the
University of Sheffield has a vibrant community of undergraduates, postgraduates and postdoctoral researchers. The department enjoys a long-standing international reputation for academic research led by staff who are passionate about exploring and teaching on some of the biggest issues facing the world today.
We are looking for a part-time (2 days per week) research assistant to work on an international collaborative project titled “Towards an Integrated Approach in Understanding and Managing Soil Health” between The University of Sheffield, UK and the University of Alberta, Canada from 1st October 2023 to 31st May 2024 (8 months). The position available is at the University of Sheffield (Department of Geography).
This project aims to build a multi-criteria framework for understanding and managing soil health. Identifying robust indicators within a multi-criteria framework of soil health can enable a quantitative baseline and seek improvements by practising sustainable land management. The project will focus mainly on a systematic literature analysis and map out interconnections between various physical, chemical and biological soil health indicators. As part of the project, we also aim to organise an international conference session ‘an interdisciplinary and integrated approach to soil health’ for the forthcoming prestigious Centennial Congress of the International Union of Soil Sciences in May 2024 (Florence, Italy). During the project, we aim to build a strong network of stakeholders by building a dedicated website and social media presence. We will also make forums on various issues related to soil health.
We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.
We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
