Job description
This is a research assistant role to contribute to and develop the research work on the project
Title: “Investigating the analgesic properties of psilocybin in preclinical models of chronic pain”. This Post is funded by the Academy of Medical Sciences for 15 months from date of appointment.
This project aims to uncover mechanisms by which psilocybin may help alleviate or treat pain. We will model common causes of long-lasting pain in humans in laboratory rodents and monitor behavioural and biological changes following psilocybin treatment, comparing results with the response to antidepressant drugs. Chronic pain can also modify activity in the brain and psilocybin has well documented effects on rebalancing brain activity in rodents and humans. We will measure brain activity by imaging areas in known to be altered by chronic pain and modulated by psilocybin.
You will :
- Undertake research under the supervision of the Principal Investigator using in vivo calcium imaging, behavioural investigation and molecular biology techniques,
- Disseminate research findings and establish a national reputation through participation in national conferences
- Collaborate with colleagues within the University in the development of original research
