We are looking for a Research Associate in Interactive Data Visualisation to contribute to the development, operation, and support of research for the FCDO-funded and Peace and Conflict Resolution Evidence Platform (PeaceRep) at the University of Edinburgh Law School.

The Opportunity:

The award-winning PeaceRep team at the University of Edinburgh Law School is seeking to hire a Research Associate in Interactive Data Visualisation, to support the development of PeaceTech capacity within the research programme. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with an international and interdisciplinary team of researchers and data analysts and will be focusing on developing data visualisations in the field of peace and conflict studies, working with newly collected data on peace processes and peace mediation. The post-holder will both design visualizations and work to customise and adapt other existing visual tools. The position will involve close collaboration with Prof Christine Bell, Dr Sanja Badanjak, the PeaceRep visualisation team, and the wider PeaceRep programme, particularly Dr Mateja Peter and the PeaceRep data team at St Andrews School of International Relations.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • MA degree or equivalent in practical experience in data visualisation or a related discipline; or equivalent research/academic experience undertaken.
  • Proven track record of using interactive methods to display datasets to high finished quality, including data visualisations.
  • Excellent programming and software development skills for web and visualization development, particularly in tools such as D3.js, Vega-lite, Python vis library, Tableau, or Power BI, to support the development of timelines, maps, and network plots.
  • Excellent visual and visualization design skills, including with reference to interactive design and ability to perform basic data manipulation and transformation techniques to prepare data for visualisations.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperate with a team, excellent organisational skills, and a flexible approach to working;
