Position Summary Information
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The School of Education is an academic unit reporting to the Provost. The School is a major center of research, teaching, and public service within the State of North Carolina, the nation, and the world. The School offers a full range of undergraduate and graduate programs. The mission of the School of Education is to conduct research, and generate basic and applied knowledge about human development, educational technology and entrepreneurship, teaching and learning, school counseling, school psychology, administration, as well as educational policy and leadership; prepare leaders in the profession of education by conducting outstanding research, teaching, and service; and assist in the development of strong and effective public schools in North Carolina. In order to fulfill its mission, the School is organized into three academic divisions: (1) Culture, Curriculum, & Teacher Education (CCATE), (2) Learning, Development & Psychological Sciences (LDPS), and (3) Educational Policy, Organization, & Leadership (EPOL).

This position is a full-time/time-limited position with an expected duration of one (1) year:
The Early Learning Lab (directed by Dr. Kathryn Leech) in the School of Education at UNC-Chapel Hill is searching for a research assistant. The research assistant will work on NSF- and NIH-funded projects related to parenting, families, and children’s language and cognitive development. The lab uses observational and experimental methodologies to understand how social interactions with adults promote early childhood development. Duties will include transcription and coding of audio/video recordings of children’s language experience, scheduling and conducting remote data collection sessions with families and young children, and supporting data management efforts. The research assistant will also have the opportunity to contribute to data analysis and preparation of results for publication.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Basic knowledge of research principles, study design, and methods of data collection and analysis.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with families, children, and other members of the research team.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The ideal candidate will have:
- Prior experience conducting research in the fields of Psychology, Education, or Human Development.
- Strong self-directed initiative and the ability to tackle challenges independently.
- Experience with statistical analysis software (e.g., SPSS, R) and/or web design skills.
- Familiarity with software (e.g., CHILDES) for transcription and coding of children’s language experience.
- Highly desirable: Experience working with young children and families in research settings.
