About us:*
BeZero Carbon is a global ratings agency for the Voluntary Carbon Market. Our ratings allow all market participants to price and manage risk. BeZero’s ratings and research tools support buyers, intermediaries, investors, and carbon project developers.
Founded in April 2020, our team combines climatic and earth sciences, sell-side financial research, Earth observation, machine learning, data and technology, engineering, and public policy expertise. We work from five continents.
*
Job Description:*
We are looking for outstanding Remote Sensing Scientists to join our Geospatial and Earth Observation team, to assist in developing cutting-edge methods for monitoring ecosystem change and GHG emissions in the Voluntary Carbon Market. You will work primarily in an R&D environment, reviewing academic and other scientific literature and developing prototype models, and working with our engineers to deploy and maintain production-grade tools and pipelines. You will also collaborate with our ratings scientists and product team, to understand the questions driving our work, and the needs of our clients.
We work with a variety of remote sensing data, including optical and microwave from both passive and active sensors. Combining information from spaceborne sensors with extensive ground measurements helps to improve our monitoring capabilities. You will have a strong scientific or industry background in remote sensing for applications in environmental science, and especially the carbon cycle. Particular areas of specialism, either from a technical perspective (e.g. SAR technologies) or domain-specific expertise (e.g. biomass estimation or fire monitoring) are welcomed.
It would be great if you could come into the office in Old Street, London 2-3 days a week, but we also welcome applications for remote working (GMT +/- 3 hours).
You will report to our Head of Remote Sensing, Dr Niels Andela, previously at Cardiff University and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. You will also work closely with our Data Science team led by Thomas Huijskens, formerly Associate Partner at McKinsey & Company and Senior Principal Data Scientist at QuantumBlack.
*
Responsibilities:*
- Review existing and forthcoming remote sensing technologies for change detection and monitoring of projects in the Voluntary Carbon Market, across a diversity of ecosystems and project types.
- Drive innovation on a range of Earth observation applications for monitoring carbon dynamics, at local to national scales, using ground measurements and satellite-based training data.
- Work with our engineers to deploy and maintain production pipelines, and with our ratings scientists and product team, to understand their needs and communicate results.
- Build and strengthen research collaborations across academic and business communities.
- Communicate internally and externally through blog posts, webinars, conferences and scientific publishing.
*
You will be our ideal candidate if you:*
- Have a PhD (or equivalent industry experience) in remote sensing, with strong knowledge of sensor technologies, their strengths and limitations, and potential for fusion across sensor types.
- Are a highly motivated, self-starter with a track record of contributing to innovative research projects related to ecosystem dynamics and the carbon cycle.
- Have excellent coding skills in Python for geospatial and statistical applications, ideally with experience in machine learning methods.
- Are familiar with some of the following: Postgres, PostGIS, Snowflake, AWS, Prefect, GitHub, QGIS, R.
- Are excited to work with people from a diverse range of backgrounds, spanning remote sensing, ecology, engineering, policy and finance, and from all corners of the world.
- Are positive and kind. As a team and as a company, we believe in being kind over being nice. We are constantly giving and receiving constructive feedback and we are always trying to be empathetic.
Please know that even if you don’t have experience in all the areas above but think you could do a great job and are excited about building a great company culture, bringing transparency to the voluntary carbon market, and being part of a fast-growing team, we would love to hear from you!
*
What we’ll offer:*
- Competitive salary and equity in a rapidly growing VC-backed start-up through share options.
- Ability to learn and develop alongside a range of sector specialists from the scientific, economic and business community.
- Opportunity to work in a cross-cutting role, interacting with lots of different parts of the business.
- 25 days leave (with additional time off between Christmas and New Year, and for your birthday).
- Private medical insurance, dental, critical illness cover, income protection, life assurance, medical cash plan, cycle to work scheme, and a health and wellness cash allowance.
- Enhanced parental leave.
- Regular social events.
- Opportunity to work remote or in our Central London office space (Old Street) with flexibility to work from home 2 days a week.
- Nomad working over the summer, allowing you to work from another country.
*
Our *interview process:
We have a quick turnaround time and will let you know as soon as we can after each stage. Ask ANYTHING. The whole process is as much about making sure we are a fit for you as much as the other way around.
- Initial screening interview (15 mins)
- Second interview(s) + skills test
- Final interview with senior management
- Reference checks + offer
