About the Company
Bairds Malt Limited was formed in March 1999, when two existing companies, Hugh Baird & Sons Limited and Moray Firth Maltings plc, merged to form a new company. We currently operate four malting plants within the UK and produce malt primarily for the brewing and distilling industries. Approximately 10% of our malt is exported to customers around the world who want to use British malt in their brewing or distilling operations.
Our merchanting business, Scotgrain Agriculture Limited, procures malting barley for our own use and trades in barley, other grains, and related agricultural commodities.

We have our new facility opening in 2023 in Inverness with exciting opportunities to come on board to train as a relief operator in readiness for production starting.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure compliance with the company safety procedures, policies and the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.
While working shifts:
- Production of malt or barley drying, as per the instructions from the maltings management. This includes the steeping, germination, kilning and barley drying operations.
- Transfer of grain between vessels / bins as required.
- Dress barley and malt to required storage bins
- Liaise with engineering staff/site management to report and assist in identifying operational issues.
- Liaise with malting management to report any obvious productions anomalies and be familiar with the operational practices for each of the 3 plants
- Monitor the wastewater treatment facility as required
- Operate the pelleter equipment as required
- Maintain the cleanliness of the production vessels and all the working area.
- Complete all necessary records in accordance with the company quality standards.
While working days:
- ·Assist Senior Malt Technicians to dress malt and barley.
- Operate the wastewater treatment facility, maintain high levels of cleanliness, perform basic laboratory analysis, instrument calibration and chemical and waste management
- Maintain a high standard of plant and site hygiene by power washing, vacuum cleaning and sweeping plant, equipment and external areas
- Carry out weighbridge operations as required.
- Operate peat fire as required.
- Assist plant engineering department as required.
- Operate the Forklift truck/ Drive company vehicle as necessary.
While working harvest night shift during harvest:
- Filling Saladin boxes with barley and emptying after drying
- Sampling of barley during drying and testing samples for moisture
- Transfer of dried barley into correct storage area
- Maintain the cleanliness of the boxes, under box floors and all working areas
- Liaise with engineering staff/site management to report and assist in identifying operational issues.
- Liaise with malting management to report any obvious anomalies and be familiar with the operational drying practices.
- Complete all necessary records in accordance with the company quality standards.
Skills, Abilities and Qualifications required:
Essential:
Skills/Abilities:
- Literate and numerate with the ability to follow procedures accurately
- Prepared to be flexible and work varying hours, sometimes at short notice
- Reliability (Time keeping / Attendance)
- Aptitude (Problem solving / Initiative / Motivation)
- Computer literate
- Good communication skills
- Ability and confidence to work unsupervised
- Prepared to be trained for manual handling & confined space entry
- Physically fit
- Full driving license
Desirable:
Qualifications: FiM & CMC (or willing to work towards)
Skills/Abilities: Previous Forklift Truck experience advantageous but not essential
