Job Summary/ SupportProvided

We are currently recruiting for 1 part-time and 1 full time position. The part-time position (24-hour contract) is 12 hour shifts over 2 days per week and the full-time position (36-hour contract) is 2 full days and a sleep to be worked in a block. You will be working within a small team, currently consisting of 1 team leader and 3 other support workers. A rota system is in place, and you will need to be fully flexible to cover shifts Monday through Sunday and be flexible to cover for sickness and annual leave

About the Client

M is a 50-year-old male who has sustained a brain injury as the result of a Road Traffic Accident over 20 years ago. He has significant mobility issues and is paralyzed down one side of his body. M uses a wheelchair to mobilise, and he also experiences Dysphagia and well-managed epilepsy with occasional need for rescue medication. A therapy team has been appointed to oversee his ongoing rehabilitation and promote his independence.

M has a good sense of humour, enjoys various activities, and has a good relationship with his staff. His speech has been affected due to his brain injury, but M enjoys socialising and communicating with his staff, family and the wider community. Patience, understanding, and effective communication is essential for M to ensure that he is included and respected throughout his support. M currently enjoys attending Leeds United football matches, adapted skiing at Chill Factore, hydrotherapy, shows, holidays, garden centres and various other activities.

Key Roles and Responsibilities of the Position

In general, this will involve taking an active role in working with M to attend appointments, encourage mild exercise, accompanying him with shopping, and liaising with appointed therapy professionals. The list below is not exhaustive but key areas are as follows:

  • To assist M with accessing the community, food shopping, clothes shopping, and encouraging him to engage in suitable social and leisure activities.
  • To be available to accompany M on family holidays both in the UK and abroad.
  • To accompany M in any appointments during your shift
  • To promote a healthy and well-balanced diet, in conjunction with his family
  • To promote M’s wellbeing and happiness.
  • To support M with all aspects of his personal care including bathing, dressing and toileting.
  • To maintain a safe environment for M in his home and in all community-based activities (subject

to completion of risk assessment training).

  • To follow support programmes agreed with M, family, case manager and therapists.
  • To promote a clean environment
  • To advise the family, or where appropriate the case manager of any concerns regarding M’s physical and psychological health.
  • To use initiative when unforeseen events occur, and the family / case manager are not directly available to provide guidance.
  • To work as an individual responsible to the case manager and to ensure good communication, flexibility, and a consistent approach to care.
  • To attend meetings and training sessions as requested.
  • To make a daily report following each duty regarding M’s welfare.
  • To liaise with the team leader for annual leave requests and alert the family and case manager of sickness that will prevent them working, in order that cover can be organised.
  • To report to the case manager regarding general progress and any incidents that give rise for concern.
  • To respect the privacy of M. All matters relating to M’s situation and family are to be treated as confidential and are not to be disclosed to a third party.

Personal Specification

Desirable

  • NVQ in Health and Social Care
  • Experience supporting therapy programmes e.g., Occupational Therapist, Speech and Language Therapist and Physiotherapist

Essential

  • Previous experience of caring for others
  • Previous experience of working with clients in their own homes and lone working
  • Experience of providing care services to physically disabled individuals
  • Working with clients with Epilepsy
  • Awareness of the principles of confidentiality
  • Understanding of taking a reablement approach to promote independence
  • Knowledge of safeguarding protocol and procedures
  • Knowledge of Epilepsy and ability to spot the signs of a seizure
  • In possession of a full UK driving licence and have been driving for at least 12 months
  • Good oral communication skills, fluency in English language
  • Able to communicate in writing, maintaining accurate records
  • Have good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to motivate and encourage others
  • Skills in listening and demonstrating empathy in a non-judgemental manner
  • Flexible approach to working hours, shift patterns and support

Employment Package

Pay Rate

£13.00 per hour – Monday to Friday

£14.00 per hour – Saturday and Sunday

NMW rate for sleeping nights

Other Benefits

  • 5.6 weeks paid annual leave pro rata. The leave year runs from April to March. (You may be instructed to take a period of your annual leave entitlement when the client is on holiday, please refer to your Contract of Employment.)
  • £13.00 per hour if required to work Bank Holidays.
  • Pay to attend supervision/team meetings.
  • Pay and expenses when required to attend training courses as requested by employer.

Probation
There will be a six-month probationary period

Training
A full induction programme plus regular support, supervision and ongoing training will be provided.

Working Environment
The client lives in his own home which has been designed/adapted to meet his needs.

The home is a strictly no smoking environment and under no circumstances will staff be permitted to smoke at any time during the working day. Staff will also need to ensure that they arrive on shift free from the odour of smoke.

All matters relating to the client’s condition are to be treated as confidential and are not to be disclosed to a third party. As this employment is based in the private home, it is inevitable that on occasion the carers will become privy to certain matters relating to the personal life and business affairs of the client. These too should be treated with the utmost confidentiality and, wherever possible, all support staff should avoid coming into contact with personal belongings and correspondence.

Appointment to the post is subject to satisfactory references, a clean enhanced DBS check and a completion of a 6-month probationary period
