An opportunity has arisen for an experienced engineering technician to join the multi-disciplinary team in the Tayside Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Technology (TORT) Services Assistive Technology department based within Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.
The Rehabilitation Engineering Technician provides technical expertise in the assessment, design, manufacture and delivery of electronic assistive technology, providing high quality solutions to help people with complex disabilities to live more independently through the use of environmental controls. In addition, they will work with a range of specialist equipment designed to offer improved posture, mobility and quality of life for disabled people including wheelchairs and associated seating.
The successful candidate will have extensive hands-on engineering experience, possess logical fault finding skills and be competent in the use of workshop machines and fabrication equipment. They will have a good understanding of electrical systems and an ability to use modern digital applications.
Contemporary practical knowledge of wheelchair or electronic assistive technology would be an advantage but not essential; however, for the candidate with appropriate technical experience there will be opportunities to develop new skills in the field of assistive technology. Working with a team of technicians and clinical specialists, the role is primarily based within the workshop but also provides technical support in patient’s homes and other care settings.
Competency will be demonstrated at interview and through evidence of training, practical workplace experience and relevant qualification in a technical subject.
TORT Services include the Assistive Technology Service (Wheelchair and Seating), the Tayside Orthotic Service and the Tayside Prosthetic Service. TORT through its constituent specialisations is committed to providing a prompt and clinically appropriate service to enhance the quality of life and independence of people with disabilities through the use of technology.
