Cornwall Ambulance Service Ltd is delighted to be opening this advert for the recruitment of Paramedics to join our expanding Falls Response Service covering Cornwall. In March 2022 Cornwall Ambulance Service were commissioned to provide a falls response vehicle to attend to calls from people who have fallen in the communities across Cornwall which plays a pivotal role in supporting people in the community when they need it most. The service has helped reduce the number of emergency ambulance callouts, enabling them to attend to more life-threatening calls. It has also allowed many vulnerable or elderly patients to stay at home rather than being admitted.

Job Summary

An experienced and autonomous practitioner working in the community who will provide high quality and timely patient centred care. The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, treatment, management and referral of a diverse range of patients who require urgent clinical care in the urgent care setting. Experience in primary and urgent care presentations is a crucial requirement for this role and the post holder should be driven and passionate about using these skills to provide place-based care in the community, attending to the key concept of avoiding hospital admission where appropriate.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The post holder will:

● Act as a paramedic with an enhanced scope of practice, demonstrating specialist clinical competence and a knowledge base beyond those associated with conventional paramedic roles.

● Clinically examine, assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate efficacy of treatment/interventions for all patients presenting with a range of acute, non-acute and chronic medical conditions in the urgent care setting.

● Assess clinical conditions and supply medicines using a suite of patient group directions and other agreed guidelines to initiate or support the management of patients in the urgent care setting.

● Be an experienced practitioner in the autonomous assessment and management of falls patients as a solo clinician.

● Rapidly recognise deteriorating patients who require emergency intervention and arrange appropriate treatment accordingly.

● Deliver evidence based, contemporary clinical practice by utilising applied knowledge of clinical audit, critical appraisal of research, research methodology, ethical review and research governance.

● Undertake assessment of patients within the community using appropriate diagnostic skills and initiation of investigations where appropriate.

● Communicate effectively with patients, carers and families.
● Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with clinicians and operational staff to ensure delivery of a co-ordinated service.
● Exhibit standards of personal and professional conduct and performance to maintain professional registration by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
● Maintain accurate, contemporaneous patient healthcare records appropriate to the consultation.
● Adhere to organisational, national and regulatory codes of confidentiality in regards to all patient information.
● The post holder must be agile and flexible to changing working conditions, additional reasonable management requests, going above and beyond in their roles in order to be a responsive clinician for an innovative patient care service.

● Undertake any other reasonable duties as requested by a manager.

Person Specification

QUALIFICATIONS

HCPC Registered Paramedic E

University qualification in autonomous practice/clinical skills (e.g. BSc Hons Urgent or Emergency Care, Healthcare) E

Evidence of extended relevant qualifications (e.g. Dip UMC, RCGP Specialist Practice, Cert, CoP Diploma in Primary and Urgent Care) D

Educated to a postgraduate level 7 standard in a relevant area, with an MSc being desirable. D

EXPERIENCE

5 years post registration experience E

Experience of specialist level practice working in urgent care setting (e.g. primary care, MIU/UCC/WIC,ED or relevant community teams) D

Excellent communication skills E
