INTRODUCTION
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our clinical oncology team as a sister/charge nurse on Ward C4.
We’re looking for highly motivated, experienced and enthusiastic nurses with a genuine interest in clinical oncology along with a commitment to continuous learning, team work and mutual support.
ABOUT THE TEAM
Our team is made up of passionate oncology nurses and healthcare assistants. We work closely with the wider multidisciplinary team on a daily basis including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, the palliative care team and other allied health professionals. There is a great team spirit on the ward. The nurses provide 24 hour care for patients receiving inpatient radiotherapy treatment including specialist brachytherapy treatments, patients that are unwell with emergency oncology problems and palliative patients. C4 consists of 20 inpatient beds and 3 iodine rooms which are utilised for patients receiving specialist radioactive treatment.
MAIN DUTIES
In this role, you’ll plan, implement and evaluate care and, in conjunction with the ward manager, you’ll be involved with auditing standards of care carried out by our nursing team. You also:
- keep up-to-date with clinical developments and research findings
- be involved with auditing standards of care carried out by the nursing team
- maintain your own competence and knowledge within your particular area of specialism

As part of this role you will be responsible for:
- supervising the professional work of nursing staff and exercise good leadership skills
- to act up for the Ward Leader in his/her absence
- to participate in own appraisal and undertake those of junior staff ensuring any education and development needs identified are fed into the Care Group training and development
- to hold the unit bleep and act as liaison for the unit, following appropriate training
As well as considerable post registration experience with appropriate post qualification study within the field of cancer nursing, you’ll need to be able to demonstrate:
- professional development to degree level is desirable
- ability to effectively manage change and be forward thinking
- competency in intravenous therapy and preferably chemotherapy administration
- proven acute care skills and a thorough understanding of current acute health service issues
- preferable competence in management of epidurals and Patient controlled analgesia (PCA)
