Job description

The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) is an international centre of excellence with an esteemed reputation for diagnosis, assessment and treatment of neuro-musculoskeletal conditions.

We are the largest specialist trust in the United Kingdom and amongst the largest orthopaedic specialist hospitals in Europe. The theatre complex at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital consists of 10 operating theatre, a plaster theatre 4 new operating theatres in the near future. In addition to the wide range we also perform minor urology case support general anaesthetic provision and recovery for the CT/MRI diagnostic scanning and CT guided procedures.

Furthermore we do major revision work not undertaken in other centres. The recovery areas currently consist of 15 bed spaces and other recovery spaces in the Surgical Admission Procedure Unit for chronic pain procedure. The Recovery has a well-established team where excellent standards of care are delivered.

We understand the rights to privacy and dignity and always put patients first. Here is an opportunity for staff to join the recovery team develop in both adult and paediatric post anaesthetic experience in all the recovery areas.

The band 5 role is open to learning and development of new knowledge and skills in theatres and all the recovery/ post anaesthetic environment. We are seeking a Band 5 recovery practitioner who is passionate, dynamic, forward thinking, to join the Recovery team .

Adult trained Candidates should be aware that it would desirable for them to be considering working a paediatric second registration in post anaesthetic role. As the department seeks to increase the paediatric recovery staff. They will be an expectation for the provision of high standards of care that is update and informed and best practice.

You will be expected to maintain a high standard of clinical work when carrying out recovery / post anaesthetic procedures. Responsible for the safe custody of medication, including checking and administration. Ensure compliance with our clinical governance framework, you will motivate colleagues, champion service user safety and dignity and drive continuous improvement. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, Comfortable working in a high-pressure acute environment. Good eye for detail while monitoring patients, Ability to quickly notify medical personnel and experienced staff with regarding abnormal side effects or changes in a patient’s condition. Proficiency with hospital management systems,

Our Team is very diverse and works well together. This vacancy would suit any Nurse/ ODP who is looking for a Team that can provide a high level of mentoring and support on an on-going basis. We have a wide range of social events that staff may join locally in the department and trust events that staff also access team building exercises. There is good support from colleagues and structured clinical development supported by the clinical educator.

They are also a lot of training opportunities for staff to work and rotate in other areas if they express an interest. But the main area of employment will be the recovery department.

Job Description

Job Title: Recovery (Registered General Nurse /PaediatricRegistered Nurse/ ODP)

Accountable to: Chief Nurse and NMC/ HCPC

Job Purpose:
Responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development of programmes of care and the implementation and evaluation of those programmes. Carry out all relevant forms of care without direct supervision. Teaches and supervises qualified and unqualified staff. Maintains high standards of care within the department. After 12 Months of post registration experience the post holder should be able to regularly take charge or team lead the clinical area in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility of taking charge or team leading.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

Practice according to NMC code of conduct.

Clinically based in a designated area of the recovery /theatre/ CT and Imaging department Surgical Assessment and procedures Unit SAPU.

Ensure nursing and post anaesthetic care is delivered using an individualised approach.

To work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team.

Ensure that all patient documentation is accurate and comprehensive.

Maintain good communication with all health care staff and ensure prescribed treatment is carried out.

Ensure the safe custody and safe administration of medicines and report any discrepancies.

Practice in accordance to documented and verbal anaesthetic and surgical/ CT and Intervention after care sheets and post procedure instructions and planned management, implementation and evaluation of the care provision of the conscious/ unconscious patient handed over care in the clinical area of the assigned department under supervision and support ,from all clinical teams.

To work with supervised supported roles gaining experience to independently plan and prepare relevant equipment in the post anaesthetic areas supporting planned operating lists in all clinical areas such as theatre, Surgical Admissions Pain Unit (SAPU), and Ct and Imaging department, recovery areas.

Recognise priorities in organising patient care and manage workload appropriately.

Evaluate pre and postoperative and post procedure care relating to the prevention of postoperative/ post anaesthetic complications in all areas where Post Anaesthetic care is provided such as Theatres , CT and Imaging department and Surgical Admissions Pain Unit (SAPU).

Effectively convey the plan of nursing care, surgical, post anaesthetic and post procedural information to other clinical staff involved in the direct care of patient or patients. Ensure that surgical, anaesthetic and after care / post procedure instructions are carried out or handed over accordingly.

Undertake extended roles of care within the unit as authorised by the nursing advisory committee.

The post holder should demonstrate:
Be a clinical specialist for a designated area of the recovery/ Post anaesthetic areas of the Theatre, CT and Imaging department and Surgical Admissions Procedure Unit.

According to anaesthetic and surgical/ CT and Imaging intervention: plan, implement and evaluate the care of the conscious/ unconscious patient in Post anaesthetic care units in the theatre and CT and Imaging department and Surgical Admissions Procedure Unit (SAPU) .

Educational Responsibilities

Assist with the orientation programme for new staff and nursing observers and newly recruited staff.

Ensure that personal limitations are verbalised and adhered to.

Develops own professional and personal development through research, innovation and attendance at suitable study days.

Participate in research projects as appropriate, seeking to develop nursing practice.

Participate and teaches as appropriate in the departments in-service education programme.

Promotes a work-based learning environment.

Assists in the Supervision and Assessments and also facilitation of nursing and healthcare professional students in the work place.

Participate in Individual Performance Review and RNOH Appraisal policy.

Management Responsibilities

Assist with the maintenance of equipment and ordering of supplies, to promote good care and prevention of waste.

Develop an awareness of the cost implications of equipment and supplies.

Maintain the department according to hospital and theatre policies, responsible for the cleanliness of equipment and environment.

Report any potential complaints or untoward incidents to the Recovery Co-ordinator/Team leader and participate in the Trust’s Risk Management process as appropriate.

Be flexible with working hours to facilitate the smooth running of the unit and participate in the working day week and weekend on-call shift system.

Be an active member of the multi-disciplinary team, ensuring good communication with other departments.

Assist in the utilisation of staffing resources to provide the most effective cover for the department.

Ensure that the Recovery areas for theatres / Imaging and CT / Surgical Admission pain procedure Unit operate smoothly on a day to day basis.

Support the department manager in issues arising from the Trust Board Strategies.
