Perioperative Operating Room Nurse Fellowship

The Perioperative Operating Room Nurse Fellowship is designed specifically for experienced RNs who have not yet worked in an operating room setting. Please see program requirements below.
The Perioperative Operating Room Nurse Fellowship was built upon an educational course designed by the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN). Fellows rotate through all of the orthopedic subspecialties learning both scrub and circulating roles. At the end of the six-month experience, Fellows who successfully complete the program are offered positions in the Main operating room. The program includes a mix of classroom, lab and clinical experiences, working side by side with preceptors who are experts in the operating room nursing practice. The HSS Professional Development Center features a mock OR and simulated patient care setting, including "Sim Man," to help assist new graduate nurses in their transition to the world of "real time" nursing.

Working in an evidence-based Nursing environment that commands excellence every day, you will learn to provide comprehensive nursing care to our patients in the Operating Room setting.
Once you successfully complete this program, your scope of practice will include: clinical competence critical thinking skills, educating patients and their family members both in the operating room and holding areas, consideration and compassion, responding to each patient with thoughtfulness for their age, developmental level, cultural and religious beliefs. In addition, capacity to collaborate with the OR team to promote the highest standards of safety is an essential competency to fulfill the mission of HSS.
Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements
- BSN from an accredited school of nursing required
- 1+ years’ of RN experience in an acute care required
- NYS RN license and registration required
- BLS and ACLS certification required
Essential Qualifications
- HCAHPS/EPIC knowledge preferred
- Your scope of duties will include operating room clinical competence, incorporating physical and emotional assessments, age specific competency, critical thinking skills, and educating patients and their family members regarding their plan of care and clinical pathway.
- Strong patient centered approach with emphasis on providing exemplary and world-class customer service
- Meticulous attention to detail
- Self-motivated and proactive; a team player who knows how to think critically in a fast-paced, challenging environment
