Job description

The Chemotherapy Unit at East Lancashire Hospital provides care for both Oncology and Haematology patients. We are looking for a highly motivated nurse who is keen to learn and develop as a chemotherapy nurse. You will need to be able to work autonomously, but also be part of our team. The unit is fast paced, challenging and rewarding all at the same time, on average treating 45 patients per day.

If successful you will be expected to care for a number of patients each day, ensuring that each patient receives the best care and information required. You will administer chemotherapy and other therapies, including blood products, and be able to address any queries or problems associated with the patient’s regimes. Cannulation and venepuncture skills are essential however, training can be provided. You will be required to be able liaise with our consultants and doctors when required.

As a Chemotherapy nurse you will be expected to provide support and advice to patients receiving Systemic Anti Cancer Treatments (SACT).

You will administer SACT competently and safely and be able to recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.

Work collaboratively with other members of the MDT.

Working as a member of the chemotherapy team the post holder will provide specialist nursing care for Cancer patients delivering SACT and supporting patients and relatives through their Cancer journey.

CLINICAL:

  • Perform comprehensive assessment of patient nursing needs, plan, implement
  • and evaluate care delivery according to changing health care needs.
  • Be proficient in the administration of systemic anticancer and support therapies to patients within the unit.
  • Be proficient in central line care, venepuncture and cannulation.
  • Become proficient in analysing blood results prior to treatment administration.
  • Become proficient at time management and scheduling of patients for treatment.
  • The post holder will take on the challenge of being the patient advocate.
  • Collect, collate and report information, maintaining accurate patient records.
  • Involve patients and carers/relatives in the planning and delivery of care.
  • Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure needs are met in relation to care input and support for ongoing care needs.
  • Be responsible for ensuring accurate and timely patient records are maintained.
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
  • Ensure that adequate precautions are taken to minimise the risk of infection in relation to the safe disposal of body fluids, including blood products.

  • Assist with co-ordinating the work of the nursing team.
  • Supervise others and participate in their education and development.
  • Contribute to the development of services.
  • Ensure the effective and efficient use of physical and financial resources.
  • Monitor and maintain health, safety and security of self and others.
Education and Development.

  • Develop own skills and knowledge and contribute to development of others.
  • Ensure own compliance and compliance of others with regard to mandatory training and PREP requirements.
  • Must be willing to undertake Chemotherapy course.
  • Complete Cannulation skills training and SACT workbook
Clinical Governance.

  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and clinical guidelines for self and others.
  • Continually monitor standards of care and contribute to improvement of care, through benchmarking, audit and research.
  • Participate in patient and public involvement activities.
  • Support people’s equality, diversity and rights.
  • COMMUNICATION:
  • Ensure effective communication and maintain a good liaison when dealing with patients, visitors and work colleagues.
  • Attend the Advanced Communication Course.
