Job description

Reginald Hart Ward is a 30 bedded trauma and orthopaedic ward, looking after patients who have a wide variety of orthopaedic conditions including fractured neck of femurs.

We are looking for enthusiastic and dynamic individuals to join a team that delivers exceptional care in a busy environment. The role involves working closely with a wide multidisciplinary team including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dieticians and more. You will be expected to gain knowledge regarding the fractured neck of femur pathway, care of an orthopaedic patient and both pre and post operative care of a surgical patient.

The post-holder is responsible for direct clinical care for individual patients and groups of patients within their area of work. This includes the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care from admission to discharge.

The post holder is expected to take charge of a ward, following an agreed development period and also be responsible for staff and resources in the absence of the ward manager or deputy.

The post holder is expected to supervise junior staff and be able to teach qualified and unqualified staff, including pre and post registration students.

The post holder will be required to work in rotation in all ward areas within the division of surgery and anaesthetics for clinical development or service needs. This includes allocation to the admission and discharge facility. The post holder will be required to work shifts throughout the 24hour period.

All new staff will be subject to a probationary period covering their first six months in post. Travel between hospital sites may be required.

Provide expert clinical knowledge and skills within the ward/department.

Work with the ward manager and nursing team to develop and promote best nursing practice.

Work as part of the ward team to assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care in line with best practice.

Ensure that self and other professionals adhere to infection control best practice and policies in all aspects of clinical work. Seek advice/support as necessary from senior staff or the infection control team.

Seek expert advice and support from specialist nurses when planning and delivering care to patients.

Maintain accurate and clear documentation of all nursing care and communication with the multidisciplinary team.

Communicate with patients and relatives in a sensitive manner, providing information regarding care and progress as required.

Support bereaved and distressed relatives when required, referring to senior staff or bereavement service as required.

Liaise with the multidisciplinary team to ensure clinical care is optimised from admission to discharge.

Facilitate discharge of patients to enable safe, appropriate and timely discharge with suitable ongoing arrangements for care needs.
