Job Description:

Table Tennis Ireland (the Association) is the National Governing Body for Table Tennis within the 4 individual provinces of Ireland. Table Tennis has demonstrated over the years that it is a sport suitable for all age groups, from juniors to veterans, as well as able bodied and those with a disability. The Association’s head office is in Irish Sport HQ at the Sport Ireland National Sports Campus (Dublin).

Table Tennis Ulster (TTU) is a provincial Branch of Table Tennis Ireland (TTI) and is responsible for promoting and developing the sport in Ulster. TTU has an Office at Lisburn Racquets Club, Lisburn. The contract is initially to the end of March 2024 and maybe extended subject to confirmation of funding.

TTU and TTI have been successful in securing Sport NI Sports System Investment funding (supported by National Lottery Funding). The funding will support the development of opportunities for participation in the sport of table tennis in Ulster focusing on the priority areas of retention and growth, pathway access and equality, diversity and inclusion.

Reporting to Operational Supervisor, this role will be an 8 month fixed term contract and the position will be based at Lisburn Racquets Club (36 Belfast Road, Lisburn, BT27 4AS).
There are 3 posts available. The contract is initially to the end of March 2024 and maybe extended subject to confirmation of funding. The post will involve travel within designated region and access to a form of transport is required to meet the requirements of the role.

The role requires excellent, planning, communication, collaboration, and organisational skills and the ability to work on own initiative in a flexible and co-operative manner. The role is to support the successful implementation of the Sport NI Sports System Investment Project Plan priorities. Reporting to the TTU Operational Supervisor (OS) the Regional Development Officers (RDOs) will plan and deliver activities which will increase participation in table tennis in line with the Sports System Investment project plan. The role will involve working with a range of organisations and groups including local Councils, third level institutions , Schools, Clubs, Leagues and other organizations, within agreed geographical areas (RDOs). The post holder will be required to work on their own initiative and as part of the wider Associations team.

Key responsibilities:

Project Delivery

  • Support the delivery of the TTI/TTU Sports System Investment project plan by planning, organisation and delivery of table tennis activities under the investment priority areas - retention and growth, pathway access and equality, diversity and inclusion.

Retention and Growth

  • Supported by the OS, plan and deliver activities which will achieve an increase in sustainable participation in table tennis focusing on the following initiatives:
  • Expansion of the Table Tennis Active Schools Programme into additional Primary Schools
  • Delivery of the Young Leadership/Participation Programme into new Secondary Schools ensuring the programme aligns with TTI and TTU Participation and Female Development Strategy
  • Proactive engagement with Special Needs/Para schools and/or organisations to increase opportunities for sustainable participation in table tennis for para players.
  • Exploring opportunities for establishment of new clubs in region.
  • Providing opportunities for Female only table tennis sessions and events; creating opportunities for social engagement
  • Delivering Bat & Chat sessions in agreed clubs to retain and increase participation for 50 years+
  • Supporting the organisation of regional Junior and Senior Challenger events to cater for social, physical and mental wellbeing groups to retain current participation level.
  • Working with leagues to initiate a review of current league system to support attraction and retention of players.
  • Linking with Local Authorities and other Agencies to build and strengthen relationships and identify collaborative projects which will increase participation in table tennis to achieve project plan objectives.

Pathway Access

  • Supported by the OS, plan and delivery activities that will give players an equal opportunity to access table tennis, giving them the prospect of achieving their best potential in the sport regardless of ability and gender, and also for under-represented groups.
  • Coordinate the Talent ID system with local coaches and clubs to ensure players throughout the province have the opportunity to be streamed into pathways.
  • Facilitate the identification of potential coaches, officials and administrators to support development of table tennis.

Equality, Diversity And Inclusion

  • Supported by the OS, Identify opportunities to develop partnerships with Local Councils, Ethnic Minority Groups, and other Agencies such as Youth Centre Agencies, Disability Sport NI, Age NI, U3A, Parkinson’s UK to share resources and increase opportunities for under-represented groups to participate in table tennis.

Team

  • Engage in regular team meetings for monitoring and review of project plan activities to ensure project outcomes are achieved.
  • Participate in training and development opportunities and support training and development opportunities for volunteers involved in project initiatives to support achievement of project outcomes.

Administration / Promotion

  • Provide regular reports and datasets in relation to activities delivered and outcomes achieved for reporting against the project plan objectives and KPIs.
  • Comply with organizational policies and procedures in relation to project planning and delivery of activities.
  • Provide support and reports to the OS as required related to Sports System Investment budget planning and spend for activities to be supported by Sports System Investment funding.
  • Promote and provide updates on project activities via TTI / TTU websites and other social media platforms.

Any other duties as required from time to time.

Competencies:

Qualifications: Level 1 Qualification (or equivalent) in Table Tennis coaching and 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above including Mathematics and English (or equivalent) is essential. At least 1 A Level (or equivalent) and/or a relevant third level qualification (or equivalent) is desirable.

Previous Experience: 1 years experience of working in sport development activities and/or working with sports clubs and volunteers and/or demonstrable experience utilizing Microsoft office or equivalent is essential. Experience of working with key sporting partners including local Councils is desirable.

Knowledge: Knowledge of the principles of sports development and knowledge of table tennis in Northern Ireland and Ulster (structure and strategy) is desirable.

Skills: Ability to be self-motivated, resourceful, work on own initiative in a flexible and co-operative manner. Excellent organisational skills, numeracy, accuracy and attention to detail. Effective interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills. Be approachable, helpful and friendly. Ability to work with and liaise with staff and volunteers effectively. These criteria are all essential.

Other factors: Willingness to work out of normal office hours including evenings and weekends. Access to a form of transport that enables the post holder to meet the requirements of the role.
