Job description
Directorate: Communities and Place
Hours: Full time (37 hours)
Contract Type: Permanent
Location: Streetpride, Stores Road, Derby
The Waste Disposal team are responsible for the management of over 100,000 tonnes of household waste collected from our residents and other activities across the city. We have a vacancy for a Recycling Officer to join our small team, tasked with working with residents to encourage waste minimisation and recycling in the city.
We may be biased, but there has never been a more exciting time to work in waste. Forthcoming changes to how local authorities collect waste, as well as increasing awareness of the impact our consumption of stuff has on the climate, means there is much to do! This is your opportunity to make a difference to the local community and environment.
Your role will entail communicating, promoting, and educating stakeholders on waste and recycling within the city. This is an important role and an excellent opportunity for a self-motivated person who loves to communicate through all channels.
You will also manage a small team of Waste Minimisation Officers tasked with working with residents to bring about a measurable reduction in household waste arisings through waste minimisation and diversion. In addition, you will also work alongside our operational teams and landlords and managing agents to ensure households have the infrastructure they require to participate in recycling. You will help overcome barriers to responsible waste management and encourage behavioural change.
The successful candidate will preferably have waste experience and should have experience of working in a customer focused environment. You should be proactive and committed to helping improve how waste is managed in Derby. You should be independent and able to progress work under your own initiative.
If this sounds like a challenge you’re interested in, we’d like to receive your application.
You must have a current full driving license.
This is a permanent role. Job shares and secondments will be considered.
For an informal chat, contact Elysia Green, Waste & Recycling Officer on 01332 640237
As part of our safer recruitment checks the successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check.
All employees will normally be appointed to the minimum of the grade for the job. For reasons connected with a particular need of the Council it may be appropriate, subject to approval, to appoint to a higher point in the pay grade.
Before you complete your application form please read our guidance on filling in your application form.
Quick Tip! Remember to align your personal statement to the Essential Criteria in the Person Specification
Please be aware that where there are staff within the organisation who are 'at risk' of redundancy, requirements to redeploy to another suitable role will apply and take priority.
The closing date for this vacancy is Friday 22 September at midnight. Any applications received after the closing date will not be accepted.
Interviews will be held Friday 29 September 2023.
