Job description

The University Medical Centre in Bath is looking for an enthusiastic, confident and reliable full-time medical receptionist to join our friendly GP Practice team. Previous experience of working in a General Practice or similar health care organisation is helpful but not essential as full training will be provided.

The successful candidate will need to be available to work a shift pattern of early shifts worked from 08:00-16:00 and also later shifts from 10:00-18:00 across a weekly rota schedule.

Starting salary will be based on experience from a minimum of £10.50 an hour at age 23 and reviewed at six months.

Main duties of the job

The Medical Receptionist role will require you to welcome, assist and direct patients in being able to access the appropriate health care service they require in a courteous, efficient and professional way.

Main duties will include booking of appointments, taking telephone enquiries and ensuring the smooth running of the clinical day to day surgeries whilst working on the front desk in the Practice. There will also be a variety of administrative tasks which will include the registration of new patients, managing incoming and outgoing mail and communications, processing repeat prescriptions and processing data entry and recording information in line with Practice guidance and policy.

About Us

The University Medical Centre is an NHS GP Practice based on North Road in Bath. The Practice has a large patient population comprising of University students, staff and also the local residential population who are all able to register as patients with the Practice.

Job responsibilities:

  • Ensure an effective and efficient reception service is provided to patients and any other visitors to the Practice
  • Deal with all general enquiries, explain procedures and make new and follow-up appointments.
  • Using judgment and communication skills ensure that patients with no prior appointment but who need urgent consultation are seen in a logical and non-disruptive manner.
  • Explain Practice arrangements and formal requirements to new patients and those seeking temporary cover and ensure procedures are completed.
  • Take telephone calls and make bookings for all clinical staff. Receive and attend to general telephone calls associated with the running of the Practice.
  • Record requests for home visits.
  • Action repeat prescription requests
  • Enter patient information on to the computer as required.
  • Manage Patient notes and correspondence
  • Support the new patient registration process to record new patients on to the medical system accurately
  • Provide prescription collection service for patients at the Medical Centre in line with protocols.
  • Maintain reception diary for meetings and holidays.
  • Arrange emergency transport for patients
  • Undertake any other additional duties appropriate to the post as requested by the GP Partners or the Practice Manager.
