Job overview

Our Engineers focus on the assets that form the foundation of our transport system. The role of a Rail for London Infrastructure (RfLi) apprentice is critical in ensuring the ongoing performance and safety of the Elizabeth line, its stations, and assets. You will be responsible for maintaining and ensuring our assets are operating at peak performance in order to carry an estimated 200 million passengers per year.

What will I be doing?

Your three-year development programme will be made up of various placements. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills, knowledge and experience you need for your successful career.

The work will vary from placement to placement but will be specific to specific disciplines. You will work with a team of qualified and licensed engineers, who will provide oversight and guidance throughout your programme, teach you the skills required for the role and most of all, share their extensive knowledge and experience. The work will be split between practical work (competence) and theory (knowledge) throughout the programme, and you'll be expected to produce a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your growing competence and understanding.

The first year will be generic disciplines across the Elizabeth Line assets for you to gain a better understanding of which eventual pathway you wish to choose. The pathways to choose from are Permanent Way Track, Telecoms, Electrification or Signalling; your placements will then be tailored to that pathway choice. Although on the programme you will choose one pathway, RfLi promotes the learning of other disciplines over time to provide you with a more holistic understanding of multifunctioning teams across the Elizabeth Line.

What do we look for?

Everything we do as an organisation is to ensure that our evolving city remains future proof for millions of Londoners. Our talented apprentices form a vital part of that vision, so it’s important that we find the best people to help us do this. We’re looking for people who:

  • Have a passion for engineering
  • Are highly motivated and proactive
  • Have a creative approach to problem solving
  • Are logical thinkers

As a member of the team, we’ll give you responsibility and the opportunity to add value. If you are excited by inspiring and influencing the future of London, then this is the career path for you.

Where can this career take me?

Upon successful completion of this apprenticeship, you could roll-off into the Elizabeth Line maintenance team which could lead to further career development opportunities such as supervisory roles, project management, site management, surveying and site engineering. The skills, knowledge and experience developed during your time on the programme will open a range of opportunities within engineering.

What training and support will you get?

You will be working towards a Level 3 qualification in Rail Engineering.

Typically, you will be required to attend a London based college for 3–5-week blocks over the learning year.

Whilst on the scheme, we’ll support your technical development through a wide range of on-the-job practical experiences and placements. We’ll also support your professional development through a combination of classroom-led training courses, online training courses, mentoring opportunities and structured networking opportunities. You will receive one-to-one support throughout the programme from your scheme sponsor and your Line Manager. You’ll also be connected to a ‘buddy’ who will be an ex- apprentice.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 2 GCSE’s Grade 4 (C) and above including Maths and English Language (or equivalents).

You are not eligible for this scheme if you currently hold or are working towards a qualification at the same or higher level in a related subject or have already studied content from the qualification for this scheme.

You must be 18 years of age by 11th September 2023 to be eligible for this scheme.
