The Opportunity

At the GLA, we have a high-quality apprenticeship route that combines working in a great job, comprehensive training and development opportunities and a fair salary.

The Public Health Practitioner Apprenticeship consists of 36-month long opportunity to build on your organisational and communication skills and apply your ‘can-do’ attitude whilst working towards a Public Health Practitioner Level 6 degree qualification.

You will work in a real job role with the GLA for 80% of your working hours and study toward the apprenticeship for the remaining 20% (equivalent of 1 day a week). This will be a combination of online learning and approximately 1 day per month at the University of Coventry.

As a Public Health Practitioner Apprentice at the GLA, you will:

  • Be involved in work across the GLA Group Public Health Unit to support your apprenticeship. Increasing your responsibilities over the three years of the apprenticeship as detailed in the job description above.
  • Provide support to projects and/or events, as directed by team members, taking on more responsibility over the course of the apprenticeship.
  • Deliver an outstanding customer service to all stakeholders both internally & externally.
  • Network and attend meetings with both external and internal stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively and support the wider team people with their workloads during peak periods.
  • Actively participate in your own development plan under the supervision of your line manager and the training provider.
  • Constructively take part in meetings, training, seminars and other events designed to improve communication and assist with your own development and that of your apprenticeship role.

Training and Development

Within your apprenticeship you will:

  • Complete a Public Health Practitioner Level 6 degree qualification funded by the GLA. This will involve attendance at Coventry University (in person), online and coursework alongside completing tasks in the workplace (depending on specific course requirements).
  • Join a personal and professional development programme that will involve a series of varied development activities and events throughout your apprenticeship.

Progression following the apprenticeship

After you have successfully completed your apprenticeship, you will have gained valuable workplace experience and attained a professional qualification allowing you to register as a UKPHR Public Health Practitioner. This will improve your chances of finding a public health role, either within the GLA or with another employer or help you move on to further training. We will provide support on your approach to the wider job market as part of your development programme.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for this opportunity, you will meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Be 16 years old or older (up to any age) at the start of the apprenticeship.
  • Have the right to work in the UK, EEA, Switzerland, Gibraltar and/or its Overseas Territories, and have been a permanent resident for the last three years (as part of the funding requirement).
  • Not currently qualified in public health at Level 6 or above (e.g., you cannot already obtain a degree or master's in public health).
  • Currently not undertaking any other formal form of study (e.g., college or university course).
  • Experience of community development or work in a community or neighbourhood setting (paid or unpaid).
  • Interest in public health and developing a public health focused career.
  • Knowledge of the principles of protecting and improving public health.

Qualifications/experience required:

  • Proof of Level 2 or equivalent English and Maths qualification, grade 4 (C) or above.
  • Demonstration of successful study at Level 3 (A level, Access, BTEC certificates) or equivalent experience, providing evidence of working at a level 3 study*. For applicants without the Level 3 qualifications, at least 2 years’ experience in a public health related role which will need to be evidenced in your application.

Please note: the location of this opportunity will either be at our main offices, Union Street and City Hall but you will be required to go to Coventry University (1 day per month)
