The Association of British Insurers is the leading trade association for the UK’s insurance and long-term savings industry, at the forefront of public policy debate across Westminster and the Devolved Nations.

We’re looking for a Public Affairs Adviser to support the team deliver political impact, build relationships with key stakeholders and represent our world-leading sector.

We are a small team of dedicated, enthusiastic public affairs professionals and you’ll have the opportunity to lead on policy development, parliamentary briefings, influencing legislation and networking with a wide range of parliamentarians, Government officials, think tanks – not to mention our member firms and stakeholders from across the financial services industry. The ABI works with almost every Government department across Westminster and is a great place to develop public affairs skills and experience in a diverse and exciting policy space.

What’s the job?

  • Work with the Manager, Public Affairs and Assistant Director, Head of External Affairs, to deliver political impact, engagement with stakeholders, influence and monitor legislation on key policy areas.
  • Influence future policy and legislation through raising the ABI’s profile as part of our Security Futures campaign and develop negotiation and networking skills. .
  • Prepare and communicate materials including: briefings ahead of Parliamentary debates, responding to Parliamentary Questions and Ministerial Statements, helping co-ordinate the ABI’s work on legislation, Select Committee Inquiries, Government consultations and All Party Parliamentary Groups.
  • Co-ordinate and implement programmes of engagement with parliamentarians and stakeholders, including coordinating the delivery of ABI events in parliament, representing the ABI and insurance industry individually, and alongside senior colleagues, and ABI party conference activity.
  • Share relevant, accurate political information with colleagues and respond to developments in Parliament and Whitehall.
  • Develop relationships with key stakeholders including ABI member representatives, parliamentarians and government officials.

What skills do you need?

  • Political nous – you understand the mechanisms for effective engagement with a range of stakeholders and have in-depth knowledge of UK politics.
  • Excellent relationship management skills – you’re an empathetic, confident communicator who can build rapport with a wide variety of stakeholders.
  • Lobbying skills – you know how to lobby and can influence and persuade politicians and policy makers.
  • Teamwork – you get stuck in, work proactively with others and are comfortable working at pace.
  • Organisation – you proactively organise and prioritise a busy workload with exceptional attention to detail.
