Job description
Training and equipment provided, applicant must be free at least 2 nights a week Sunday to Thursday. Please state any nights you can't work in the application.
Goose’s Quizzes are looking for a new host to take on a number of weekly pub quizzes in Edinburgh; after a few weeks of training you’d be placed into 2 nights a week, progressing onto 3 if the schedule allows, with Fridays and Saturdays off. The same nights and the same venues every week. As much as we try to sort quizzes to be local to you, this isn't always the case, and some travel to other parts of the city will be required. Long term there is also scope to cover other quizzes and run private events.
Being a quiz host is great fun, you’d be joining a young and enthusiastic team who are keen to develop and work together on providing the best quizzes possible. The work is almost exclusively evening based. Applicants must be over 18.
The role is to run quizzes: the main focus is to be comfortable on a microphone, a confident reader of English, and to ask questions without being overbearing on the clientele of the venue. The quiz is for the bar and the customers; this is not a role if you want to be a celebrity, the current hosts tend to be people who enjoy pub quizzes and want to help others enjoy them too. We've employed a great bunch of people over the years who've all enjoyed it, and we get to work in some pretty interesting bars.
Running a quiz includes: Set up – Sound equipment (simple set ups with lots of training provided), electronic device for music and scoring (via Excel). The Actual Quiz – speaking on a microphone naturally and clearly, reading questions, marking answer sheets, controlling music levels and generally choosing amazing songs to play between questions and rounds. We don't do many quizzes that involve providing a speaker, so you can breathe a sigh of relief if you thought you had to lug a big set up around (plus all the questions are provided too!).
Each host has their own style which develops over time, this is an encouraged element to the role! The training process takes about 2 weeks and all equipment and questions for running the quizzes are provided with a bag to keep it all together and safe. It is the responsibility of the host to look after the equipment and make sure everything needed for running the quizzes is there every night. Communication is paramount to all the work done at Goose’s Quizzes, with a small team for the volume of work delivered, communicating clearly about situations arising or difficulties being experienced is essential. We value the opinion of every host we have and want someone who is looking to contribute in a meaningful way.
It takes all sorts to be a quiz host, and indeed many of our current hosts would never have pictured themselves in the role, so feel free to apply; we will consider all applications. Quizzes run between Sunday and Thursday, with around 3 hours per quiz (2 hours to run, half an hour either side to sort equipment). A bonus structure is in place, a digital tipping scheme and the chance for a wage increase to £12.50 an hour once certain targets are met.
Person Requirements: Calm, approachable, reliable and most of all a great communicator. The majority of the role is done independently and the applicant must be reliable and deal with a range of situations that could occur in a pub environment. Training as to how to deal with all issues is given and the rest of the team are on hand at all times to help with anything difficult. When running the quiz, the applicant must be approachable and helpful for those taking part, a successful quiz is one where everyone leaves the pub keen to return the following week to take part again. The host is a facilitator for the people in the pub to help them enjoy the quiz, the focus being on the questions and delivering the quiz in a manner appropriate to the venue. The applicant must be a fluent English speaker and be able to speak and read English confidently.
Please send a CV and a little cover letter about yourself. We appreciate this is a bit of an odd role and we don't think there's one set type of person who makes a good host, so we're more interested in who you are and what you enjoy rather than specific qualifications.
