SOAS University of London is the leading Higher Education institution in Europe specialising in the study of Asia, Africa and the Near and Middle East. SOAS is moving towards a new model of international partnerships which is responsive to the transnational character of our global challenges.

About the Department: Student Advice and Wellbeing is a student-facing department within the Student and Academic Services directorate. It offers an integrated service including advice on financial difficulties, visa, immigration, multi-faith, disability and accommodation. Our student mental health service provides both therapeutic and non-theraputic support to students that are having difficulties with their mental health.

About the Role: The role of Psychotherapist is key to ensuring that our students receive high-quality 1:1 therapeutic support. Our Psychotherapists are trained in at least one therapeutic modality such as psychodynamic therapy, art psychotherapy, integrative or any other therapeutic modality that can be adapted to working within a short-term (8 sessions maximum) framework.

This role works as a part of a multi-professional service and as such will be required to develop strong working relationships with other teams within Student Advice and Wellbeing in order to provide the best possible care for students that engage with our service. This will also involve developing relationships across the university with academics, student union and professional staff to help to increase awareness of mental health and best practice in relation to this. The mental health service that you will be a part of will consist of psychotherapists, psychologists, trainee therapists and mentors. You will also be required to be involved in developing new projects/initiatives aimed at improving mental health for students at SOAS.

The service aims to offer a supportive and inclusive experience to students that choose to engage with us. The successful candidate will play an important role in supporting the work that we do collectively and helping to develop in new and innovative ways to meet the needs of the students.

About you: You will be a qualified psychotherapist working in supervised practice for a minimum of 2 years. You will need to demonstrate the skills and experience you have developed within supervised practice and an understanding of the issues that students in Higher Education may present with. You will be able to demonstrate experience of assessing severity of need and delivering counselling appropriate to that need. An ability to work under pressure and on your own initiative is imperative as well as the ability to work well within an integrated multidisciplinary team environment.
