As one of EastEnders’ design management team, the Propstore Manager reports to the Series Designer and Line Producer and is responsible for managing the operation of the EastEnders Propstore to ensure successful delivery of Props to budget and schedule without sacrificing design integrity, through effective planning, monitoring and control of the Props operation.
Main ResponsibilitiesThe Prop Store Manager will effectively and proactively line manage a team of Action Prop Hands whilst being responsible for the properties on EastEnders and being required to maintain and ensure that the contents of the store, the stock set and the lot props are always in good condition.
Your duties will include –
- Accountable for implementing and managing the Propstore Health & Safety code to maintain safe working conditions under H&S on the site
- To effectively and proactively line manage a team of Action Prop Hands
- To draft, negotiate and manage overall Propstore requirements / schedules and operational logistics, identifying effective use of staff and resources and advising on and implementing alternative methods, facilities and suppliers as appropriate within budgetary constraints
- To hold and manage a Prop Store budget for transport, props consumables and loss and damage, to include monitoring and controlling actual expenditure against set budget. Ensuring that agreed costs and time-scales are adhered to, challenging actual or potential variations to budget / schedule and keeping the SD and AP informed, as a matter of urgency, of any potential overspend in this area
- To manage the Propstore operations during filming, co-ordinating activities and ensuring appropriate props facilities and resources are maintained, working closely with key production team members to ensure the smooth running of the production at all times and installing best practice and discipline to ensure minimal loss or damage to props
- To liaise with the Props and Setting Manager regarding overall props staffing requirements and financial controls
- To maintain and develop, as appropriate efficient office and administration systems (including effective record keeping and records of continuity of Stock sets and hired Properties) so that information can be easily accessed
- To raise contract documentation for new or contract staff using BBC electronic systems
- To identify, advise on and implement, as an ongoing process, both industry best practice in the management of props and opportunities for value for money savings within the props department
- To ensure successful delivery of props to specifications and deadlines, responding to changing circumstances and re-planning as necessary
- To set up and manage a transport system for pickings or returns in a cost effective way
- To have managerial responsibility for relevant staff working in the Propstore, actively promoting their development and training within the Props Department
- To read all scripts in order to anticipate any future prop requirements
- To work closely with Production Designers, Buyers, Art Directors and Construction Manager to meet design requirements for individual blocks of filming
- To communicate and action common needs with the Design, Construction, Setting and other departments
- To source such competent, qualified Propstore staff needed to facilitate the smooth running of the production; to work with the Props and Setting Manager in the contracting of such staff to achieve the most effective use of labour across the site
- To initiate and maintain an appropriate health and safety monitoring system within the Propstore, including generic risk assessment and CoSHH information, and to be responsible for ensuring that the requirements of this system are complied with
- To provide skill assessment and monitoring and arrange training as required; to promote an atmosphere where talent can thrive and where enterprise and initiative are encouraged for the benefit of the department
- Able to meet the physical demands of the Propstore Manager’ job and work the hours scheduled in accordance with the contract but in addition to manage own time in accordance with company policy
To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate the following –
Required -
- An in depth knowledge and proven experience of both Drama production and Propstore management, working effectively as part of a management team
- Excellent organisation, planning and analytical skills
- Experience and strong track record of planning and revising budgets and schedules and ability to deliver on time and within budget
- People management skills; including a track record in attracting, developing and retaining talented individuals; ability to work with and motivate a team
- Understanding of Health and Safety legislation as it relates to TV Production and experience of implementing H&S systems appropriate for a working prop store
- Must have first rate negotiating and influencing skills
- Able to build productive relationships with a wide range of people at a range of levels and to develop a network of useful contacts both inside and outside the BBC
- Wide knowledge of the Transport and Industry suppliers
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with absolute discretion
- Experience of working in a media or creative environment with ability to deal with creative people and their representatives
- Must be computer literate, with a knowledge of and ability to use and compile spreadsheets, use computerised systems and packages including the Microsoft office suite
- Collaborative – keen and able to work effectively with a wide range of departments – within TV Drama and across the BBC. Naturally used a collaborative style
- Flexibility, self-motivation and considerable pressure. Able to maintain personal effectiveness by managing own emotions in the face of pressure, set backs or when dealing with difficult situations
- Is able to think ahead to establish an efficient and appropriate course of action for self and others. Prioritises and plans activities taking into account all the relevant issues such as deadlines, staffing and resource requirements
