Job description

It is an exciting time to join the National Trust. The ambition for outdoor experiences through to the year 2030 has been agreed and we are now at the point of realising this ambition through the creation of an outdoors programme of work.

Within this programme, we have a role for a Project Officer for Walk Programming to join the national Outdoor Experiences team, on a two-year fixed term contract or internal secondment opportunity. This is an incredible opportunity for someone to support the development of projects designed to increase access to the outdoors for diverse communities.

Your contractual location will be our head office in Swindon, however there will be an opportunity to agree hybrid working arrangements which strike the right balance for you and the Trust.

What it's like to work here:We’re bigger than you think, we’re more complicated than we appear and we’re larger scale than you’d imagine. We’ve got passionate people in all our teams, and we’ve got so much more we want to achieve. We’re for everyone, forever and we really mean that.

What you'll be doing:You’ll work closely with the Outdoor Experiences team to support a project to build capacity in organisations delivering walks for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities. Working with partners, the project will deliver a new training pathway for walk leaders, enabling them to offer more walks to more people. Specific goals are to:

  • Increase the number of qualified leaders from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds
  • Increase the number of participants in walking activities from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities
  • Develop a community of walk leaders connected to the National Trust, to provide equally positive experiences for people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities in the outdoors
This is a new project and you’ll be supporting all phases including product development, testing, evaluation and roll-out. Organisation and communication are key. Your role will be to ensure our project work and communication channels are up to date and that we are delivering information and actionable messages to all stakeholders.

The project sits within our broader Group Walks Project to develop training resources around walk programming. The Project Officer role will include opportunities to be part of and contribute to this work too.
