Job description
About Mission Zero Technologies:
MZT is an early-stage start-up backed by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Anglo American and Deep Science Ventures. We are pioneering a breakthrough Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology that can scrub CO2 from the air using a fraction of the energy and cost compared to incumbent technologies. Within 18 months of creation, MZT has progressed its technology from concept to demonstrator, successfully raising £7.5M from a mixture of private and government funding to supercharge its growth and deliver pilot projects from 2023. MZT's technology is a hybrid of approaches, combining efficient solution-phase capture of CO2 with a continuous and compact electrochemical separation technology.
Mission Zero and its work is guided by its principles of:
- Candour and extreme ownership
- Radical optimism combined with pragmatism in delivery
- Hyper competency
- Recognising opportunity in challenge
We strive to realise a world where humanity has new tools to fight climate change and produce everyday products such as concrete blocks and plastics - all from atmospheric carbon emissions. To do this we need to realise a decentralised Gt supply chain for CO2 sourced directly from the atmosphere and fundamentally alter our relationship with carbon.
The opportunity:
Due to MZT's rapid growth, we are looking for a highly-organised and level-headed Facilities Manager to be the point of call for the day-to-day management and operations of all of our engineering spaces and laboratory. As a start-up company, this role will be key to establishing and sustaining best practices, particularly in our pilot and laboratory facilities. We want you to drive a strong H&S (health and safety) culture throughout the team; whilst ensuring work productivity, effectiveness and efficiency is maintained. We want someone who is experienced in managing, supporting and collaborating within a technical environment to oversee key operational aspects. This includes lab management systems, H&S, utilities, general duty of care, equipment, chemicals and consumables; to name a few
The role will be full-time site-based over in Bethnal Green managing our existing space. We are looking to acquire an additional space that will need support and advice from this role. You will work closely with the scientists and engineers executing a combined vision for future spaces that will best facilitate the technical growth of the company.
This position offers a challenging range of responsibilities and the opportunity to develop a career in a fast-paced and quickly expanding start-up.
Our vision for our first employees is that they own the business with us (literally), grow it with us and become part of the collective story of Mission Zero, taking a catalytic role in its early history and the fight against climate change.
Key responsibilities

- To provide effective responsibility and accountability over the area with the alignment of the CTO and support to drive the co-founder's vision.
- Contribute to H&S committee meetings to inform senior management of progress and highlight issues.
- To select and monitor laboratory suppliers and support with chemical and equipment related ordering. This includes the creation and maintenance of the laboratory/pilot chemical inventory.
- Ensuring laboratory equipment is well maintained, calibrated and responsible for servicing or repairs where necessary.
- Managing operations regarding the expansion, modification or movement of laboratory or engineering facilities according to MZT's needs.
- Inducting new laboratory staff members into the H&S culture and systems at MZT.
- The general upkeep and maintenance of all spaces.
What we are looking for:
Essential
- Extensive experience working in a laboratory or chemical engineering environment with a minimum of 3 years of experience as a lab/facilities manager.
- Ensure all work activities and areas are compliant with relevant legislation and ensuring corrective actions are implemented and sustained.
