A bit about us

SMP has been created to deliver a network of smart motorways across England and will account for 23% of National Highways expenditure over the next five years. We will deliver technology driven solutions to tackle congestion, improve journeys and add much needed capacity on key parts of our network.

The programme has a threefold increase in the number of schemes we need to deliver. This means that we need to work alongside partners and colleagues to deliver our programme and develop the next generation of smart motorway technology. In doing this we will unlock benefits for our customers, reduce disruption, and generate value for money; as well as contributing to Major Project’s performance targets.

The advent of new technology, different ways of operating and enhanced operations provide an opportunity to significantly enhance the performance of some motorway sections of the Strategic Road Network to a Smart Motorway standard.
