Job description
At the Environment Agency we protect and improve the environment. Reducing the impacts of a changing climate on people and wildlife is at the heart of everything we do.
You will oversee our team of project managers and engineers on the repair of our flood defence assets (there is no direct staff management), and input into planning flood defence schemes.

You will:

  • Lead the team’s work: Identify capacity and development needs, workload assignment and supervision of junior team members.
  • Monitor programme and project delivery. Budget forecasting. Reviewing and submitting monthly forecasting of projects through discussion with individual project managers.
  • Assisting in finalising bids for future year programmes.
  • Contract and project manage the in-year delivery of minor ‘quick fix‘ schemes, undertaken by framework contractors.
  • Major design and construction of repairs and future flood defence schemes is delivered by colleagues outside of the team. You will work with them to ensure designs are suitable and to prioritise future work.
  • Liaise with other stakeholders within and outside EA.
  • Contribute to programming discussions and monitor developments throughout the business that may potentially impact on delivery of our schemes.
  • Provide information to national teams, management, local business boards and statutory committees to support decision making.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You are required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents, or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training is given. We will work with you to find a role that suits your interests and circumstances.

Our assets include pumping stations to help drain catchments at flood risk, flood storage reservoirs that hold water during storm events, control gates and sluices to control flows in rivers, and embankments and walls that protect people and property from flooding

  • Ability to learn new systems and embed them into standard ways of working.
  • Produce standard and bespoke management reports to enable decision making.
  • Excellent communication skills enabling you to build working relationships with colleagues and external partners.
  • A proactive approach and fresh perspective will ensure you’re always looking towards continuous improvement.
  • Planning and organisation skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively and manage multiple tasks.

We are fully committed to having a diverse and inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies.
