Project Archivist: Medieval Charters Oxford, England

University of Oxford
Full Time Oxford, England 30502 - 36386 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

The Bodleian Library holds internationally important collections of charters and other documents from medieval and early modern England. The generosity of the Mellon Foundation is enabling the Library to transform the discoverability of these collections by creating a new online catalogue, in the context of a project that aims to enable searching across the full range of archives and special collections in Oxford. You will play a major role in bringing the project to completion.
You will carry out retro-conversion of finding aids into XML metadata structures; participate in project scoping, user needs analysis, and website design; carry out any necessary standardization and enhancement of existing metadata; and encourage use of and awareness of the collections through outreach activity.
You will hold a degree and postgraduate qualification (Masters level or higher) in history, archives or another relevant subject, or equivalent professional experience. You will be familiar with a wide range of medieval and early modern documents, and with how these records are used by professional and amateur historians. You will be aware of good practice and relevant standards in the cataloguing and indexing of archives and manuscripts. You will combine strong IT skills with outstanding attention to detail. Previous experience with XML will be an advantage.
This is a part-time, fixed term position, working 18.75 hours per week for 11 months. Some of the work may be carried out remotely although some time on site will be necessary.
Our staff and students come from all over the world, and we proudly promote a friendly and inclusive culture. Diversity is positively encouraged, through diverse groups and champions, as well as a number of family-friendly policies, such as the right to apply for flexible working and support for staff returning from periods of extended absence, for example shared parental leave.
You will be required to upload your CV and a supporting statement as part of your online application. Your supporting statement should list each of the essential and desirable selection criteria, as listed in the job description, and explain how you meet each one. CV’s alone will not be considered.
Only applications received online before 12:00 midday (GMT) on Friday 24 March 2023 can be considered. Interviews are expected to take place during the week commencing Monday 17 April 2023.
