Position Description

The University of Calgary's Faculty of Law is in the midst of a sustained period of growth and renewal. In its Strategic plan - Energy.Innovation.Impact. UCalgary Law set itself the dual goals of enhancing its international eminence in the areas of energy, environmental and natural resources law and continuing its position of national leadership in the area of experiential learning. Since 2011, we have made over twenty new Faculty appointments, and we are looking to make further appointments to begin in 2023 and in years to follow.

The Faculty of Law invites applications for two Limited Term positions at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching). The anticipated start date is August 1, 2023. In particular, we are seeking scholars whose teaching interests span the curriculum. This includes subjects like criminal law, property law, legal research and writing, civil procedure, and other courses generally considered to be in the core curriculum in North American legal education. Interest in teaching advocacy would also be an asset.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the core JD program and also, if appropriate, to be involved in the graduate programs. Candidates must have a JD or LLB, together with an advanced degree in Law or a Law-related area at the time of appointment. They will need to have expertise in the use of, and ability to teach, sociological methodologies that can be applied in research in criminal law and evidence. Satisfactory teaching experience and commitment to teaching are also required.

Preference will be given to those who hold a PhD or comparable degree, either completed or likely to be completed by the start date.
Given the premium placed on collegiality at the University of Calgary, candidates will also be expected to demonstrate a genuine commitment to constructive participation in the life of the School, the University and the broader professional community.

About the Faculty of Law
UCalgary Law offers a JD, as well as both thesis and course-based LLM programs and a small PhD program. The Faculty also offers a post-graduate Certificate in the area of Natural Resources, Energy and Environmental Law (NREEL) and a post-baccalaureate Foreign Trained Lawyers Program. UCalgary Law offers a joint JD/MBA program with the Haskayne School of Business, and a joint JD/MPP program with the School of Public Policy. As well, the Faculty has a uniquely-focused partnership with the University of Houston Law Center. Most recently, the Faculty has introduced a unique dual degree pathway with the O P Jindal Global University, which allows students to earn both Canadian and Indian law degrees in a shortened period. For more information on the law school and its programs, visit the Faculty website.

In 2015, the Faculty introduced the Calgary Curriculum, which placed it at the forefront of innovation in Canadian legal education. The spirit of innovativeness embodied in the Calgary Curriculum has been a core part of the Faculty's ethos since its founding in 1976.
