In this role, you will be joining the Department of International Public Health (DIPH) which hosts a vibrant social science and applied health and systems research community, that has innovative research and equitable partnership at its core, with ethos of co-creation of research, translation of knowledge into practice, mentoring, training and capacity strengthening.
You will work collaboratively with partners across the world to develop quality research and shape global thinking on equity and global health. You will be working alongside other researchers in the department and LSTM to enable high-impact research, to inform global and national policies, support research capacity strengthening in low- and middle-income settings and facilitate the uptake of innovations and new information – including the development and evaluation of complex interventions. Your approach to research should include an ethical, human rights–based approach that aims to reduce gender and other inequities and is integrated throughout all research and activities.
Why LSTM?
DIPH hosts the Centre for Health Systems Strengthening (CHESS) which brings together social scientists and health systems researchers. We have particular strengths in health systems, community health, maternal and sexual and reproductive health, equity, fragility, urban health, chronic conditions, technologies and capacity strengthening. We have strengths in a range of methods including implementation research and community-based participatory research. We are looking to expand our work into areas of mental health, climate change and equity with a focus on marginality and vulnerable groups. We particularly welcome applicants with innovative qualitative, mixed methods, and/or skills in quantitative social science methods.
Over the past three years, LSTM has re-evaluated its diverse partnership portfolio and has developed a forward-looking strategy for sustainable, impactful, equitable partnerships, particularly in low- & middle-income countries, to deliver research, education, and knowledge exchange.
Your role will include, but not be limited to:
Research:
- Formulate, communicate and deliver a clear vision and strategy, aligned to the DIPH strategy, for the development of social sciences research that is internationally excellent, supporting the sustainability of the LSTM group and partners
- Lead, initiate, develop, deliver, and publish research, which is considered internationally excellent in social sciences and global health
- Enhance the reputation, influence, and profile of LSTM in social sciences and global health as applied to low and middle-income countries
- Work with and lead academics working in social sciences and global health in LSTM and partner organisations in developing cutting edge capacity for global health social sciences research
- Develop multidisciplinary global health research programmes, planning and coordinating a broad research activity/sustain an extensive track record of highly rated published research findings and maintain an expert reputation in specialist subject area to an international level
Partnerships
- Support the development and implementation of LSTM’s partnership strategy to continue to grow and develop our global strategic partnerships
- Embed co-developed principles of equitable partnership in all our activities
- Increase partner representation, diversity and voice within our programmes
Leadership and Management
- Articulate and deliver academic vision and leadership within individual area of expertise at international level
- Take leadership role in policy dialogue at regional, national, and global levels that help effect change based on reliable research led evidence
- Effectively lead, manage, and mentor a team of senior academic and business support staff, setting standards, monitoring progress & overseeing delegated areas of responsibility
- Proactively ensure that all relevant legal, health & safety and quality assurance requirements are adhered to personally
External Representation & Income Generation
- Proactively and professionally represent the work of LSTM nationally and internationally
- Contribute to successful competitive external funding, including contributions to team/consortium submissions
- Liaise at high level with external bodies (such as WHO) and participate effectively in complex negotiations, including participation in knowledge exchange activities in line with the UK’s Knowledge Exchange Framework
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- PhD or equivalent in a subject area relevant to global health, equity and social sciences
- Evidence of established international reputation in global health, equity and social sciences
- Outstanding record of international level peer reviewed original research publications and research portfolio that shows a continued upward trajectory, including in relation to low or middle-income countries
- Strong record of successfully generating significant/high prestige external funding (grants, contracts etc.) to support research projects
- Proven record of research leadership in a HEI and experience of developing multidisciplinary research programmes (including stakeholders from academia, industry, MOH etc. for example)
- Experience of initiating, planning, organising, implementing and delivering major programmes of work of strategic organisational-wide benefit
- Considerable leadership and management experience, including the effective use of resources and budgetary responsibility and evidence of the capacity to assume major leadership roles within and outside LSTM
- Experience of developing and sustaining long-term academic partnerships with a range of LMIC organisations
