Job Purpose
To
- Manage all aspects of production within a single department
- Ensure job holder and all departmental employees comply with statutory and company regulations
- Control and improve health & safety of employees in department
- Deliver products to customers with SoTR at the forefront
- Control the manufacture of departmental products in line with existing rules
- Seek improvements in product manufacturing processes
- Control costs and seek efficiency improvements within department
- Communicate effectively and demonstrate the company values
Principle Responsibilities & Accountabilities
Safety
- Ensure all departmental personnel are trained and competent to undertake their roles (A)
- Own the local departmental safety process (A)
- Ensure self and all required personnel complete enabling safety processes to reduce injuries i.e SBOs, Near Misses (A)
- Be an active member of the safety improvement processes across Doncaster site ( R)
- Ensure all tasks within the department have upto date and practicable risk assessments and safe systems of work (A)
Quality
- Ensure all personnel within the department are trained and competent to carry out their tasks with full recognition of quality and SoTR (A)
- Ensure the business audit system is followed to check for product manufacture compliance in your department (A)
- Ensure Quality systems are in place to manufacture product to required standards ( R)
- Ensure that products are manufactured to Doc Packs and paperwork signed off (A)
- Ensure self and all required personnel complete enabling quality improvement processes i.e QBOs,QNMs/PQs (R)
Delivery
- Deliver products to an agreed schedule (A)
- Liaise with Planning and other departments to develop a schedule to satisfy customer demand ( R)
- Declare operational capacity for planning purposes (A)
- Constantly review progress against schedules to provide early and good communications to the customers (Internal or external) ( R)
- Provide warranty and after sales support of business products and services.( R) Contribute to tendering activities as appropriate ( R)
Cost
- Seek cost improvements through labour or materials (R)
- Manage costs to annual budget plan ( R)
- Contribute to the tendering process ( R)
- Work with Procurement to ensure materials needs are understood ( R)
Operations
- Manage the departmental operation to achieve weekly, monthly and annual volume plans ( A)
- Seek productivity improvements within departments to reduce costs and/or increase capacity (A)
- Own the capacity for their department (A )
- Actively manage projects with Method Tech assistance to improve waste reduction and product flow ( R)
- Be an exemplar of communication, particularly through change and daily briefing processes ( R)
People
- Communicate effectively with all departmental staff ( R)
- Ensure all WRL HR policies are deployed and complied with in their local department (A)
- Undertake disciplinary procedures as required (R) Manage Sickness/absence process for the department ( R)
- Develop and implement training plans to ensure all departmental staff are legally compliant, undertake tasks in accordance with quality rules and teams are flexible (A)
- Undertake training needs analysis for business growth ( R )
- Ensure there is a departmental plan to mentor and support apprentice development ( A)
- Develop people to work within the Wabtec Values (R )

- The enforcement of safe systems of work
- Determining changes in hazard and risk as work practices develop
- Risk and COSHH assessments being carried out for all activities within my area, that suitable safe systems of work and training are developed, implemented and documented
- Provision of safe equipment, safe working environment, protective equipment
- The effective communication, to employees under my supervision, of formal safety documentation e.g. Risk and COSHH assessments Housekeeping, cleanliness and amenity facilities serving my areas of responsibility
- Monitoring safe working practices on a day to day basis
- Ensuring safety equipment is inspected/replaced as required; that protective equipment is recorded and used in accordance with Manufacturers recommendations
- Securing the health and safety of all persons within my department.
- Ensuring that employees within my department are adequately informed, instructed, trained and supervised to safely carry out work on which they are engaged.
- Disciplinary issues resulting from health and safety issues
- Adequate investigation of injury accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences
- Working arrangements and the safety of agency/temporary/short term contract employees
- Identifying the need for and the seeking of specialist advice and support
